"Whoever wants to know a thing has no way of doing so except by coming into contact with it, that is, by living (practicing) in its environment. ... If you want knowledge, you must take part in the practice of changing reality. If you want to know the taste of a pear, you must change the pear by eating it yourself.... If you want to know the theory and methods of revolution, you must take part in revolution. All genuine knowledge originates in direct experience." - Mao Zedong

Mandel's short book on the topic both answers to your description and is Pretty Good, though I don't entirely agree with his analysis.

Critically reading solid Bourgeois History like Tooze's Wages of Destruction with an eye for class analysis and the dynamics of the larger colonial context is probably more useful though.

'Stalin's Wars' by Geoffrey Roberts is pretty good. I'm currently reading this - https://archive.org/stream/WhoHelpedHitler/Who%20Helped%20Hitler#page/n1/mode/2up which is more about the lead up to WWII

that just proves stalin was ahead of his time wrt photoshop and composite images for media relations
#14
constructivist photo-collagists invented the use of photoshop for propoganda purposes. i can't find the one where lenin is popping out of stalin's mouth, but this one is ok

trotskyist positions on ww2 always baffle me, although tbh i've never read any of their books about it. i think the cliffites even go as far as to say that because the soviets were "state-capitalist" that defence of the soviet union wasn't necessary which is weird. in canada all the trots complain that supporting the war effort killed the socialist movement which i dunno... i'm more likely to blame actual hitler.

Earnest Mandel was of the persuasion that views the USSR and other actually existing socialisms as "deformed workers' states", so his position towards the USSR was much more positive than that--to the point that some accused him of being an apologist for Stalinism.

you say "to be fair" as if it was a bad thing.

i meant more that it says less about how he might actually feel towards the historical record of stalin and more about him possibly frightening a trot or liberal
