I wouldn't go so far to say that activity like in the article is frivolous or harmful, but it's kind of like scaring away cockroaches by turning on the light: they've just moved on somewhere else. (I think this is how it works? don't plan on ever living south enough for roaches)

I was once acquainted with a group that would infiltrate communities like the one featured (and the more frighteningly organized ones) to perform sousveillance, keep detailed records of persons threatening/conspiring acts of violence, inform real-life communities when shit was going to go down near them, etc.

Eventually they started experimenting with provoking fractious conflict and sowing paranoia within/between groups, kind of like a Red cointelpro. I imagine this takes a shitload of work and coordination though, and you don't get to score sweet Vice articles and weird twitter cred for your personal Brand.

despite VICE's best efforts the 'Faire's involvement with much of the groundbreaking viral content of the past few years remains unclear and shrouded in rumor

anti-south regionalism is often used to declare the northern US to be innocent of racism. that said, aerdil was making the mistake of thinking mocking a white supremacist facebook group was somehow anti-south.

it can be surprising how much US southern-styled white supremacist chauvinism extends itself outside of the geographic region. i'm in edmonton, about as not-south as you get, and my idiot neighbor's truck has a bigass white and proud confederate flag on it.

george wallace had a huge base of support in ethnic white Detroit and Chicago residents protesting MLK's fair housing demands waved the stars and bars. this is nothing new.

i see confederate flags around central ontario too. there is also some guy with a pickup truck that has a horn that plays something my brain says is associated with the south but i'm too lazy to look into it.

In fact, many of the racial injustices we associate with the South are actually worse in the North. Housing segregation between black and white residents, for instance, is most pervasive above the Mason-Dixon line. Of America’s 25 most racially segregated metropolitan areas, just five are in the South; Northern cities — Detroit, Milwaukee and New York — top the list. Segregation in Northern metro areas has declined a bit since 1990, but an analysis of 2010 census data found that Detroit’s level of segregation, for instance, is nearly twice as high as Charleston’s.
(...)
Education remains separate and unequal nearly everywhere in the United States, but Confederate-flag-waving Southerners aren’t responsible for the most racially divided schools. That title goes to New York, where 64 percent of black students attend schools with few, if any, white students, according to a recent report by the Civil Rights Project. In fact, the Northeast is the only region where the percentage of black students in extremely segregated schools — those where at least 90 percent of students are minorities — is higher than it was in the 1960s. Schools in the South, on the other hand, saw the segregation of black students drop 56 percent between 1968 and 2011.

please don't use the racism in the north to defend the south
#22
by the south i meant its population.
#23
utah/idaho/oregon are all honorary south depending on which county your in. theres just fewer black people so whites dont feel as threatened.
#24
most people from utah ive met were pretty chill. aside from the Olds but that's true of all old whites
#25
i hate the south, where only white people exist
#26
a fun game is that when a liberal tells you that "we" should "let" the south secede, you ask them what would happen to black southerners and they usually forget they were joking and tell you the u.s. government should ethnically cleanse the entire region of non-whites and deport them to the northern states first for their "protection"

when the great progressive shift happened and the democrats became a party dominated by northeastern white liberals who see the south as made up of "southerners", all of whom are white, and then an undifferentiated mass of racial and social inferiors who maybe think of themselves as southerners but must be guided toward realizing that georgia forever belongs to the KKK

women were also considered more right-wing overall until somewhat recently, and if some of them can give up their bigoted ways, maybe the democrats can too.
