I've never really understood their line on Syria or why they've doubled down so hard that they've been republishing blog posts for over two years now, but they just keep fucking that chicken. This time, they argue that documents discussing the intent of US allies Turkey and Saudi Arabia to foster the creation of an Islamist state in northern Syria and Iraq for the past decade are merely an attempt to slander the 'Syrian Revolution.' Last time around, they argued we need to stand with moderate Islamist forces like al nusra, an al qaeda affiliate, and directly identifying attacks on these organizations as attacks on the 'Syrian Revolution' itself ("In other words, the U.S. and its allies have taken advantage of the revulsion against the clerical-fascist ISIS barbarians to launch an attack on the Syrian revolution, on behalf of the secular-fascist Assad regime.").

its so outlandish i cant possibly be making it up, but without any further ado and for your personal viewing pleasure, i bring you The Dance of The Trots.

as an added bonus, this article notes that certain rebels had been whining for years that they haven't received any anti-tank tow missiles (weapons he argues they sorely need) without noting that the main moderate islamist organizations that got these missiles from the US joined up with IS already. maybe dumping guns into a civil war is a bad idea, but not bad enough for the International Socialist Organization!

i think trotskyists in anglo countries recruit a lot of atheist arabs and in turn have a lot of members (relatively speaking) in places like egypt where they promote a secular radical left line. so they went all in on the arab spring idea and tried to argue that we should support all the revolutions but not interventions. they have also been soft on the brotherhood at times because brotherhood is connected to a lot of opposition movements. like they called for a vote for morsi in egypt because they said it was better to have the brotherhood in than capitulate to the generals/etc. i think in syria they like some of the 'soft islamist' types because it fits this picture they have of muslim groups uniting with them against neoliberalism or whatever. also historically tony cliff was really excited about iran early on i believe (because of the workers and shura movements).

tony cliff did support the chinese revolution in one sense: he was excited about the ultraleft in the cultural revolution, proving that contemporary maoism and trotskyism are closely related revisionist philosophies.

obviously i support the ISO, and assad, and basically anyone, because this world is too small and too fragile not to love everyone.
