treat every single abuse of the monster State as an isolated, new phenomenon, preemptively stunting the idea that they are all part of the same grand scheme of eternal systematic torture. here's your press badge
aside from the fact that this practice likely pre-dates 9-11 and is far more prevalent among US police departments outside a rogue op by the Chicago PD, there's also the fact that even regular jails are basically black sites for people too poor to afford good legal representation. people on twitter were saying that locating people detained in LA Men's Central is almost impossible as well, for example.
so yeah while i'm glad this is being reported on i wish the article would contextualize it within the larger regime of systematic torture and abuse by law enforcement in the US and not some sort of extreme offshoot of post-9-11 security policies.

if i understand it right, new security legislation in canada can strip you of all rights & due process if two cabinet ministers sign off on it. it's gonna be great.
i also feel compelled to share that in canada the cops occasionally do this thing in the winter where if they pick up someone who is any combination of drunk, homeless, and/or indigenous, they drive them out to a rural backroad dump them out of the car and leave them to freeze to death. and every spring when they find the bodies everyone treats it like it's the first time this has happened. do they dump people in the desert in australia, or would they have to drive too far for it to be a sure thing?

why go to the effort of stopping to dump someone when you can just keep driving until the outspoken aboriginal community leader literally cooks to death in the back of your van. Straya
take some prozac you mopes!
general practice is different in england and wales (I mention it because this is the guardian), but then again you aren't necessarily protected from having your silence used against you during the criminal case, so you'd often see people being interrogated with an attorney present
