lesson 1: keep warm
if there's one thing i learned in this life is to keep in contact with your family no matter the circumstances. sometimes you might not like certain people who are "blood-related" and were only thrust into your existence by the crinkled, bitter hand of providence. for example the last thing i just wrote, that's not a really great way to describe how they became a part of the rich tapestry of experience that is You so avoid those words and use other ones!
lesson 2: don't go outside
i believe that certain areas aren't good for people who are prone to delusional lapses of cycled thinking. walking through the museum of natural history the other day i noticed a young woman explaining to her child the magical timeline before them of First Contact between proto-amerikkkans and the Other People.
child: were the indians nice to the settlers.
woman: well sometimes they argued and it wasn't nearly as nice as this is showing it to be.
what i managed to catch is something along the lines of keeping the obvious perfidy of the colonizing white man at bay in favor of a narrative that can still present itself as an alternative to the Thanksgiving Feast panorama of noxious fairytelling but still chooses to obfuscate the clash as one in which all agents played an equal role. since i'm posting on a forum for communists, you'll of course understand why this immediately filled me with white hot venomous rage and then i left the exhibition and bought a dirty water dog.
lesson 3: be kind to strangers
this world is confusing and there are no guides or gurus that poof-materialize on your shoulder to whisper sagely into your ear when encountering a given moral or ethical dilemma. err on the side of kindness but, you'll then ask, what is 'kindness'? is it better to give a man a fish to feed him for a day but add to the degradation and atrophy of their God-given work skills? am i equip to handle these problems for you? i say yes, i am, give that man the stupid fish. everyone hates the fact that you walk around in the train with an uncovered fish in your hand. you know how people in old-timey days would wrap fish in newspapers because that's just how it was done? well, take a cue from the meandering soup that is your cultural memory and find an AM or village voice or something and wrap that smelly shit up. give it to me, i'll know what to do with it.
lesson 4: stay calm
i love all of you and i hope none of you ever die
