In 1968, an Iowa man named Dick Proenneke decided to leave civilization and live in the wilderness of Alaska near the Twin Lakes. Proenneke filmed much of his experience as he built a cabin and many of his own tools to live life in solitude.
This guy goes in with a sled and makes a house by himself and lives like a king. He's such a badass that he's making pies through the whole winter.my mother is from up northish and has a friend who is the daughter of a guy who did this. he was exmilitary and not really capable of living around human beings, found his wife through a want ad that read like a job description. she never saw a human being who wasn't her parents for the first 20 years of her life, until her father died and her mom took her back to civilization. she's in her 50s now and has been happily living in the city, and she will tell anyone that choosing to live like that is a sign of severe mental illness and you have to be a goddamn moron to idolize that kind of antisocial masturbatory garbage.
Sounds like a moderner day Johnny Appleseed. Old johnny never got his child bride though.

absolutely watch this documentary if you have the time. its called Last Train Home and its really good. probably one of the best things i have seen
Watched this over the weekend. Documentary about the confrontations between the cops and MOVE members in Philadelphia culminating in them dropping a bomb on the building and destroying an entire city block.
Really good, composed entirely of archival footage and testimony from the commission that the city held, features former MOVE members delivering lots of sick burns to the city council too.
