i went to a modest-sized building in toronto which is supposed to be built on 'green principles' or whatever and they have a huge wall in the foyer which is just greenery fed with a constant waterfall and i couldn't help but think that probably affects the environment somehow.

fun idea: i wonder if i can make an stirling cycle engine with cycled water as the working fluid to heat water from a heliostat. decentralized, non-electric water heating. hmm if only i had the free time to think about this

my retired, no children uncle spent all of the money he would have spent on children on a pretty nice retirement house that has some form of geothermal (i think?) heating that involved water getting heated geothermally (or something) and then cycling through the rest of the house to heat it, instead of central heating. i think.

i volunteered a tiny bit at an 'environment day' thing in my town and one of the groups was some nearby farm that operated using permaculture / hugelkultur / whatever stuff i forget from the cool threads people posted here. i was too nervous to talk to them before i left but i read their literature and they seemed nice.

if some Frenchman in the 1890s can invent solar powered steam engines then i'm sure its possible to DIY solar-water-heater your showers in 2014.
