can someone trace how this story got pushed out how white people suddenly came to care about kids dying in nigeria. I read speculations it was through the British government to the BBC from there to the Guardn. etc. and then they can take their hands off the wheel and the car will careen into the Atlantic ocean and bob up in New York where it will be rescued and cuddled by liberal columnists screaming "why isnt the mainstream media talking about how muslims are scary". But idk. Its always good to know the vector.
#10
it was definitely on BBC world service broadcasts for at least a week before American outlets started writing the ‘300 Nigerian Girls Are Missing… So Why Don't You Know About It?’ articles
#11
b-b-but Jezebel I did know abou…b-b-but isn't it your job to inform the news consumer of-OK fine I'm a racist
#12
britain'd again
#13
yeah it was being reported heavily by BBC world service for ages... even before they definitively knew it was boko haram i think

mods change my name to choboco_haram

boko haram aren't very chill
#15
well they think boko is haraam, so what did you expect?
#16
it should be pretty obvious by now that boko haram as a unified entity doesn't really exist and is just a loose bunch of ragtag rural guerillas hitting really soft targets and only very vaguely associated with the western-educated guys planting bombs in major cities. hth
#17
Same, Andd al-Shabaab, and al Qaeda. and a gurl
#18
apparently an important boko haram predecessor was a 1970s islamic revival whose leader ended up declaring himself a prophet, denying the prophethood of mohammed, and forbidding the use of bicycles and watches. sounds like exactly the kind of stuff that would appeal to a bunch of alienated young middle class nigerians with degrees from british redbrick universities lol

if us or even much more nigerian military intervention happens you can bet your bottom boko haram will become a unified entity

dawkins was right

had i been born in Nigeria instead of Montgomery, MD, U.S.A., i'd prob be a boko and bomb innocent nigers.

i know a good number of african 1st or 2nd gen african immigrants from maryland and i know there are pretty large e.g. ethiopian immigrant communities around and i wonder every now and then if that's something about maryland in particular or if there are similar sized communities around elsewhere in the east coast or the us at large.

i cant really think of a more terrible place on earth really, hope to never go back there again
#28
i think its cause immigrants tend to gravitate toward prominent metropolitan areas, and after moving to dc they ended up moving out of the city like most everyone who isnt a hip white twenty something
#29
well i was thinking more like, is dc area special for some reason or are there similar sized communities around e.g. nyc or san francisco or actual big cities?
#30
yeah ive always found it fascinating how certain ethnic/national groups end up in certain areas of the us. what about minnesota appeals to hmong people? why do laotians seem to flock to texas? some are obvious, like cubans in south florida or tibetans in colorado, but yeah, why do ethiopians/eritreans drive all the taxis inside the beltway? the world may never know
#31
oh and to answer your question, apparently the vast majority of ethiopian americans live in the dc area, although the why remains a mystery

#32
is tibetans in colorado obvious bc they are Mountain People so they naturally flock to those environs

finns are in north MI bc they first immigrated as loggers and could work in that climate
#33
yeah thats what i meant. i dont think anyone is surprised that finns and scandinavians ended up in the upper midwest nor that people who were born a mile above sea level ended up in the rockies. also they are surrounded by white "buddhists" in boulder

yeah man there's lots of ethiopian businesses around where i live and they've got these weird letters that arent normal american letters and i cna't read them, and all the groceries near me sell this like flat bread and these strange spices, and i feel bad for them because eritrea broke off of ethiopia and now they're landlocked, which makes me really depressed when i look at maps

#35
the desi community in ealing and middlesex in general is predicated entirely on the relative proximity to heathrow airport so try and reason along those lines

if it makes you feel any better, most other nations in the horn of africa hate ethiopia as they have historically been pretty imperialist to their neighbours. hence eritrea telling them to fuck off for example.
