like it's cool to make fun of the goofy costumes and all but no one should make the mistake of believing that the mounties aren't every bit as sinister as any other federal police force. in some ways perhaps even more so, they have zero accountability structures and a deeeeeply entrenched blue shield, and yeah propaganda has been so effective that even if you present hard evidence that a mountie beat a handcuffed indigenous child to death in the back seat of a cop car everyone will still believe that the perpetrators are just some polite ceremonial milquetoasts. i suspect that this has an even better leverage on the popular imagination than the american image of the fbi as "hard people making hard choices"

they bite. one time i pulled up past a cop on a horse at a red light and i had a couple paper garment bags on my back sticking out and they got too close or i just startled it or something and for some reason me going by pissed off the horse and it bit me bag and literally lifted me and my bike off the ground and i fell over.

anyways in the ensuing interaction i had with the cops they said the horses are trained to bite the shit out of people in riot / crowd pacification situations and not as much kick bc its less safe for the rider

edit: also i've seen a cop on a horse chase someone on a late night on 6th street bar disctrict austin.. terrifying.
