do you not agree that (in general terms), a person who identifies as, say, a Tea Party Republican, might not be as helpful at political or economic theory/reforms, as say, somebody who identifies as a Marxist scholar or whatever?

i'm sure there are some exceptions though.

why not just look at whether someone is helpful at political or economic theory/reforms as opposed to making sure they had the right thoughts to come up with the ideas? if someone proposes some policy which you like but disagree about the reasoning then what's stopping you from making that explicit distinction? nixon started the EPA, does that mean that because nixon was a piece of shit that the EPA is identically and necessarily compromised? i agree that someone who says really awful things probably is awful and that you should be very wary about giving them power but people who don't do that can be awful too and be equally bad with power, so at best demanding correct group identity helps as a sorting mechanism but using it as a direct proxy for moral quality doesn't make sense to me.

i mean someone who is a devout christian would have plenty of reason for criticizing tpaine for being an atheist. you (and i) might think that being an atheist is a cool thing to be. i dont think discipline thinks she's hot shit *just* because she identifies as a feminist but probably because she practices that in a specific way. like half of her posts in the porn thread are about people who claim to be feminist but practice something that she finds moral indictment for.

and i'm only half being sarcastic. i still think it's lame to criticize tpaine, and i still think atheism is a more preferable quality than theism, personally. but i agree with the notion that smart people are dumb and that smart and good are not synonyms.

nobody here is religious, even the religious people arent real traditionalists but are just taking what they want and reinterpreting the rest
