she learned that the Cuban economic crisis was survived with a fundamental shift in the country's economic policies, rather than with new energy sources.

i agree there's probably something to be studied there but i think people can overdo it with this. i mean think of three key parts of cuba's survival strategy: importing cheap oil from venezuela, having millions of tourists fly planes to cuba each year, and oil and gas exploration off the coast. they also have a lot of blackouts caused by insufficient power generation, in part because they run out of oil. i've read in a few places that their internal/urban transportation system is pretty bad too.

also if maduro had lost (as he easily could have) then i'm not sure what they would have done. like who would give them oil for doctors and such. seems more likely they'd have to start paying more cash for it, which would be hard for them to do (i think it would cost them a few billion a year). i don't think they can reduce their oil much more without just shutting down parts of their economy.

i don't mean they are dumb, they are probably smart about things, i just mean... like... it's not really a "sustainable" economy in my mind.

Her becomes a lot more creepier once you remember that Joaquin Phoenix's irl girlfriend is a teenager.

The movie should have taken care to show that Phoenix only dates technologies that are over 18 years old. Maybe he could tongue a pager, and the clip gets stuck to his tongue, leading to a big physical comedy setpiece, or get his dick stuck in a vcr head cleaner and more hijinks.

I'm legit sad that Phillip Seymour Hoffman died, he was one of my favorite actors
#306
I agree thuggles.
#307
lol at jacobin's article on him

Hoffman’s talent moved him rapidly toward award-winning “prestige” pictures of the sort I tend to avoid: Capote, Doubt, Cold Mountain.

and then they spend the rest of the article talking about the big lebowski

why? I always fall asleep like 10 mins into whenever it happens to be on

all movies are pretty dumb honestly. like, it's obvious that it's just a series of images blown up and projected onto a screen in rapid succession. there aren't actually 30 foot tall people who happen to be actors and who you conveniently never ever see walking down the street.

dunno how people still fall for this shit
