CBC and other media outlets here have been pumping a story you can read in excruciating detail here.
basicaly: some teen showed up to the airport in edmonton on his way to mexico. the security screener asks him to open his bag. the kid takes out a piece of pipe filled with gunpowder with a long wick attached. security screener is confused, because they don't know what a pipe bomb is, and tries to give it back to the kid. but the teen is like oh fuck sorry sorry. so the screener is like no problem bro, keeps the pipe bomb and then sends the kid on to the plane. the kid goes to mexico. a few days later the airport tells the police. the police flip out and basically half the RCMP shows up to arrest him when he returns to canada. the teen is charged, goes to trial, and gets one year probation.
well this all broke over the past few days and people are going nuts over it. first of all people are amazed that a guy brought a bomb to an airport and only got a year's probation for it. i don't see why not though. the more serious thing is that a security screener stared right at a pipe bomb and didn't know what it was. and i guess some people are like it's because the kid was white so the guy didn't assume anything was wrong. of course, nothing much really was wrong, but i guess it could have been wrong, like if the teen thought it'd be cool to injure himself and a few others on a plane. i guess the idea is that he could bring the pipe bomb into the bathroom with him, light the comical nine foot long fuse, wait a while for it to burn down, then let it explode on himself in a furious small powder bomb that might ruin his day but would probably not bring down a plane.

The prosecutor asked the judge to impose a one-year, suspended sentence for Murphy's guilty plea of being in possession of an explosive device, which the judge granted. He also fined Murphy $100 and ordered him to donate $500 to a burn unit.
Murphy offered to tell his story to CBC News on the condition it would cover his $600 in penalties. CBC turned down the offer.

if canadian news entities weren't so cheap maybe the guy who had the crack video of rob ford could have sold it in a timely fashion instead of holding onto it and turning up dead
