You don't want to be a programmer. Why aren't you applying for economics positions at banks and government? You're not in a bad spot. Maybe Canada is different but like half of US economists work for the Fed.

a BA in economics doesn't mean much anymore. most people who do junior economics or policy work for the government have a masters degree. many economics-focused research jobs require a phd even.

that said, i'm applying to banks and government in my area for trainee style jobs as a starting point, since my main issue right now is just getting back into work discipline and building up a bit of experience. within a few years i would then move to toronto or something.

today i found out that a major bank in a neighbouring town is hiring an entry-level position. so i told my job hut counsellor and she was like oh i'm good friends with a manager at the local branch of this bank. so i'm going to apply for the job and include that i can be hired on under the training agreement for a month or two. also this bank is the best i've seen for disability stuff about hiring and support so that's good too. the other good thing is that banks are like mafias here in that once you get in it's pretty easy to qualify for training and advancement. i think that's the most likely reason they'd take a chance on me, because i have an econ degree so i could move into a personal banker role pretty easily.

the only catch is that i'd have to learn how to drive quickly because the bus system only loosely connects and it'd take like 2+ hours to get there in the mornings. it's a 15 minute drive though so it'd be easy once i'm in a car. my parents would probably drive me until i get my license though since they work about ten minutes from the bank.

i could see a bunch of reasons they wouldn't hire me but i'll give it a shot.

lol they took down the posting today, which means it was probably an internal hire that they were legally require to post for 24 hours or something. i have a few other leads though so that's good.

Well there are a lot of decent paying entry level bachelor's economics jobs. Nobody is going to be snotty about BA/BS unless the job is quantitative. However its good to be willing to relocate. Check Faily.
