Hello friends. I'm going to get my driver's license soon so I'm learning about cars. It's a lot of fun. All I need now is a job and a girlfriend and I will have reached the maturity level of a 16 year old. Tell me about your car(s), your favourite car(s), how much you pay for insurance on that mobile scrap heap you call a car. Do not post about bikes or walking or other fail transportation.

Some notes:

- I read a bit of the SA threads about cars. They seem pretty mental about cars. They take all the standard stuff about being clever consumers that other parts of the forum have but then apply them to lifehacks about cars. It felt like I was reading reviews by someone that probably also has thousands of wiki pages they wrote about my little pony: friendship is magic. Maybe I'm just cynical!

- I think my insurance for my first car in Ontario might end up being like $3000+ a year or something to start which seems like a lot of money. (I probably won't actually get a car any time soon but yeah.)

- It's amazing how much car advertising I've absorbed despite never wanting to drive before. I was looking at car websites and I could recall a bunch of slogans and shit about each car. Pure ideology.

- In the SA FAQ they frame hybrid cars as not saving any money therefore bad. But shouldn't we be trying to save gasoline so we can use it in tanks when they are sent into Iran?

Car DOS and DONTS

DO consider your needs. you don't need a "good deal" if you purchase a car within your means and needs. Most consumers only need an "economy car" which is a car that makes you feel like a wuss when you drive it to work.

DONT read the advice of pushing 30 something libertarian computer technicians regarding cars.

Let's all get Volkswagen Beetles and put marijuana plants in the flowerpot.

DO purchase my old hatchback I can't haul my trailer with and can't take with me to the states, please keep in mind that bluebook is a suggested starting place and frills such as auto start and a CD player may elevate the value of a car by hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

CD player? I'm not Patrick Bateman, I can't afford that.

Listen. You want to heat something up? This car has a little heated element you can depress to get warm and then pull out to light a cigarette.

Maybe message deadken on twitter, he's the one raking in huge sell out dollars, living in a mansion funded by vapid pap.

this is true buy cars manufactured by glorious nippon if you want advanced features such as:

  • starting even when the ambient temperature is below the threshold that water becomes solid
  • doesn't have vague electrical problems that result in anything from radio wave interference, to not starting to stalling while maintaining freeway speeds
  • lol these fucking wiper blades are only for show and will NOT remove water or debris from your visibility

Heads up, if you own or drive a car, fuck you, you sucker

get an older subaru hatchback, like mid-late nineties. or a very cheap toyota pickup. do not under any circumstances purchase a shitty sedan there is nothing more depressing.
#16
hot tip: if your pickup only has two seats, it makes more sense that you drive alone
#17
i am legally banned from learning to drive because i am not cool enough
#18

It'd be a lot easier for you to walk your dogs if you just tied their leash to the bumper of your BMW or whatever.

i'm required to have a car for my employment. no car=no job. my city does not have a population of 8mil tho so i can see that being confusing
#25
tip: Any emotions associated with cars such as 'depressing' 'cool' or 'girly' are entirely because of marketing and if you use them for you purchase decision youre basically admitting to being a weak minded fool. thats why i drive a toyota sienna.
#26
cars suck for real though. if you have to get one, just get one you like. that's my advice. thanks for listening.

#37
Why bother doing anything really... we havent even met aliens yet, which matters somehow. Fuck. *takes long, LONG, drag on an electronic cigarette by Blu* *exhales a big cloud of data*
