sure. i probably did phrase it poorly. i think it's absolutely relevant that this stuff is not particularly radical and fits perfectly well within liberalism, and in fact can be part of something just as insidious as direct repression when it comes to distorted and harmful sexuality.

If there are ways for women to be oppressed that also allow for them to have sex in other positions than missionary and talk about sex on TV, then there isn't a contradiction in my post. There are, and that's why there isn't. You yourself reduced women's oppression to those things when you tried to assert a contradiction.

I grew up in rural Pennsylvania. I'm not isolated from social conservatism. It's just obvious to me that social conservatives don't run the world and the average person pretty much anywhere doesn't have 50s sexual morality anymore.

I'll concede fully that I understated how common sexual conservatism is and as a result probably under-valued the struggles of women dealing with it. Which I already basically admitted to doing.

However I think it's obvious that sexual conservatism is not the dominant force in the world today and going by this outmoded narrative of people escaping from the shackles of bad old conservatism to free their true inner flowery sexuality is essentially liberalism, and that "sex positivity" as it is mostly divorced from a critique of repressive desublimation, pornography, and prostitution is mostly itself entirely liberal in ideology.

I maintain that I am in no way socially or geographically isolated from any kind of sexual repression given that I have spent and continue to spend a good deal of time (more at some points than others) around an extremely socially conservative demographic (poor ass Pennsyltuckians).

just looking at the names of its articles shows it worth in comparison- it offered serious journalism ("AIDS Testing Problems in Federal Prisons"), a nuanced approach to the problems of public health through the lens of personal desire ("Condom Corner: Preaching to the Converted"), a bleakly humorous approach to loss ("Cranky Words: Darn! One of Our Editors is Dead!" and "Reader's Contest: Guess Tommy's T-Cell Count"), and a wide array of advice columns and information for those dealing with the many issues that aids presents (my favorites include a cooking column called "Get Fat! Don't Die" and "Condom Corner," which also discusses barebacking and poppers)

the important thing here is that DPN is helpful in a way that implacable sex positivity can't be, in that it humanizes and lightens difficult and complex situations instead of putting an elaborate explanatory system over them, while at the same time providing all of the helpful tips and tricks the average soulless sexhaver needs and craves. because it's both personal and humorous it's much more interesting than the average healthcare screed and thus more likely to reach the intended audience of the healthcare screed, those who ignore said screeds in the first place.the gurus of sexpositivity are useless in comparison in both in their stated aims and obviously in any aesthetic/human considerations. therefore: DPN triumphs over this sexless hectoring both coming and going, just as its editors and contributors triumphed in coming, then in going. RIP.
