She makes a good point that it's definitely not a linear progression, even if ENDA gets passed or whatever you still have the Texas abortion law and so on.

sure. i probably did phrase it poorly. i think it's absolutely relevant that this stuff is not particularly radical and fits perfectly well within liberalism, and in fact can be part of something just as insidious as direct repression when it comes to distorted and harmful sexuality.

yeah, it's almost as if you've never had to think about being forced to give birth or having your organs involuntary donated. or having share to custody rights with a rapist. or having judges tell you that you're only 14 but you're fucking hot for 14, so no rape there. prob never had to argue with your doctor about why you should get to have an IUD even though you can afford it and it's legal or - just kidding i don't care anymore. this thread is boring but i thought it might be nice to give you a reality check on how the Rest of Us live.
acephalousuniverse posted:oh my god i hate hearing about all of this shit that contradicts my notion of how sexuality is dealt with in my phallic-centric world! just shut up and agree that social conservatism is dying even though it's ingrained in nearly every institution in this country and still rules almost everything poor people have to use for access to basic services. i'm right you're wrong, FREE LOVE RULES.

naw, you can keep the Tumblr shit. we women will keep dealing with the blood and guts of sexual repression.
I don't view the other things you're talking about as the result of "sexual repression," and indeed I think that your 14 year old example, or college date rapes, and so on, are much more the result of contemporary hedonistic attitudes than "sexual repression."
Patriarchy and sexual repression aren't the same thing and your shrill tumblrdom is entirely the result of combining the two things and blaming it on me.
edit: good job quoting the post I already explicitly said was an overstatement! you're not the perfect example of an internet feminist who can only shout slogans about how men don't get it without being able to have an actual conversation or aaaaaaaaaaaaaaanything

at first it was funny but now it's sad that you have no idea why the above is a complete contradiction of thought. i know you are awful butthurt that i have pointed out your ignorance and your posts are never usually this dumb. have a great day, AU.

that's never been mentioned by me at all, i've talked specifically about reproductive justice and sexual policing but carry on with the shrill tumblr internet feminist in your head.

i wanted to start my orig reply with "oh you didn't grow up with any black or latina women and the sexual cultures they're forced to conform to internally and externally, did you?" and now rural PA post confirms the greatness of his analysis.
However I think it's obvious that sexual conservatism is not the dominant force in the world today and going by this outmoded narrative of people escaping from the shackles of bad old conservatism to free their true inner flowery sexuality is essentially liberalism, and that "sex positivity" as it is mostly divorced from a critique of repressive desublimation, pornography, and prostitution is mostly itself entirely liberal in ideology.
I maintain that I am in no way socially or geographically isolated from any kind of sexual repression given that I have spent and continue to spend a good deal of time (more at some points than others) around an extremely socially conservative demographic (poor ass Pennsyltuckians).

no, that was literally about the culture clash disproving your notions about the role social conservatism plays in sexuality today but given your effort post above, i'm going to let bad ideas lie. onwards and upwards.

in its stead i propose the model of Diseased Pariah News, a defunct 90s zine from SF by and for aids sufferers. it's human and messy and emotional and personal and hilarious, plus it's not full of the laborious theoretical do-gooderism that wilts my labes at twenty paces.
just looking at the names of its articles shows it worth in comparison- it offered serious journalism ("AIDS Testing Problems in Federal Prisons"), a nuanced approach to the problems of public health through the lens of personal desire ("Condom Corner: Preaching to the Converted"), a bleakly humorous approach to loss ("Cranky Words: Darn! One of Our Editors is Dead!" and "Reader's Contest: Guess Tommy's T-Cell Count"), and a wide array of advice columns and information for those dealing with the many issues that aids presents (my favorites include a cooking column called "Get Fat! Don't Die" and "Condom Corner," which also discusses barebacking and poppers)
the important thing here is that DPN is helpful in a way that implacable sex positivity can't be, in that it humanizes and lightens difficult and complex situations instead of putting an elaborate explanatory system over them, while at the same time providing all of the helpful tips and tricks the average soulless sexhaver needs and craves. because it's both personal and humorous it's much more interesting than the average healthcare screed and thus more likely to reach the intended audience of the healthcare screed, those who ignore said screeds in the first place.the gurus of sexpositivity are useless in comparison in both in their stated aims and obviously in any aesthetic/human considerations. therefore: DPN triumphs over this sexless hectoring both coming and going, just as its editors and contributors triumphed in coming, then in going. RIP.
