Abstract:
This paper empirically analyzes the question whether government involvement in the economy is conducive or detrimental to life satisfaction in a cross-section of 74 countries. This provides a test of a longstanding dispute between standard neoclassical economic theory, which predicts that government plays an unambiguously positive role for individuals' quality of life, and public choice theory, that was developed to understand why governments often choose excessive involvement and regulation, thereby harming voters' quality of life. Our results show that life satisfaction decreases with higher government spending. This negative impact of the government is stronger in countries with a leftwing median voter. It is alleviated by government effectiveness - but only in countries where the state sector is already small.

referring to "government size" (the data they use is simply the share of government spending compared to gdp of the country) is a typical propaganda technique of the right-liberal, who conflates wasteful spending such as on militaries and hand-outs to banks with socially useful spending such as healthcare subsidies and education. even though the wasteful projects are those that the right-liberals came up with themselves, the useful projects will suffer from propaganda such as this.

well if you think most government spending is composed of those things... you should read more clayton posts because he agrees

this ones interesting

The evidence in columns 7-9, to the contrary, supports hypothesis 4b, which
states that countries with a leftwing tradition are on average hurt more by excessive
government involvement in the economy.

pg 19

Overall, it seems that having a rightwing political ideology leads to a loss of
life satisfaction. However, this only occurs at fairly low levels of government shares
and the effect turns positive above a level of government’s share in GDP of approximately 15 percent. Overall, we can therefore conclude that the government’s share in GDP exerts a negative effect on life satisfaction, and that this effect is somehow associated with the median political ideology although in a non-trivial manner.

all their conclusions are gibberish

they're poorly written i agree. but they're conclusions nonetheless. rightwing parties are only bad below 15% gdp which is basically libertopia
#13
but their data on well-being is self-reported, they came up with arbitrary political distinctions on their own, and they haven't accounted for the possibility of people in social-democracies simply being less ignorant of their place in the world. on the whole a junk study that no one should believe a word of.

its interesting how my political beliefs change based on self perceived socioeconomic status. i used to be really liberal, but once i looked up engineering salaries i suddenly became really conservative for some reason. i think the same thing would happen to most people here if they got a stem job.

anyway i dont expect any of my forecasts to come true. i just think it would be really funny if civilization collapsed for reasons laid out in inane arguments made by 1 person on an internet messageboard.
