no one wants the workers to run things. that would be stupid. no one wants to fight the cold war again, which socialism so spectacularly lost. unions nowadays are just service businesses that help workers maintain minimum workplace practices. there's nothing worth worrying about.
speaking of horrific things i'm never going to do again: one time, i had to go to bronx small claims night court thrice (4-6 hours per appearance) to defend a lawsuit by a tenant in a section-8 building that was set on fire by another tenant intentionally. tenant sued the landlord for $3,000 (maximum in small claims court is $5,000) claiming that after the fire the landlord's workers threw out family heirlooms from his closet in retaliation for him calling the cops on the landlord. he had no receipts or way of proving his damages and landlord was prepared to deny everything on the stand. the insurance carrier was worried about copycat lawsuits so they had us defend the case. ultimately we settled the case because things move so slow in Bronx night court that continuing to defend became cost-prohibitive (we could not be guaranteed a bench trial despite being there 3 times already due to a crowded docket). he got $2,000 out of $3,000. he would have gotten more if he sued for the maximum amount. cursed me out in open court too. junior partner (my direct boss) disagreed with me that we should recommend immediate settlement at the outset to the carrier, because "we had a good case." we ended up spending at least $6,000, wasting a ton of fucking time and effort, depriving someone of $1,000 who just lost all his belongings in a fire, costing the insurance company a total of $8,000 because, i dunno, justice or something.

your managing partner disagreed because he/she wanted to earn the firm more money at the expense of its client
