I finished Aku no Hana, and went on to read the manga. It has ruined my sleep.

The first girl is perfect in every way, she is beautiful, smart, kind and shows an abiding interest in the hero's true self. But she is contrasted by the real prize, a devil, a malcontent, a domineering, cruel, and misanthropic yandere who practices and preaches total self-destruction. The protag is torn between a happy life, and the hateful, liberated death drive that lurks within.

Other messages are the hollow, cowardly vanity of intellectualism, the way our true hearts are exposed and crushed during adolescence, and how we carry around sad remnants to remind ourselves of the time we once lived and loved with unbridled passion and honesty.
