Panopticon posted:we need a SMAC style borehole that goes straight through the centre of the earth and out again. would dropping stuff into it zoom out the other side and whizz up into space or would gravity slow it down after it reached half way and force it into an eternal pendulum?
it just disappears. nobody knows why
Lucille posted:One issue I can see with anything surviving depletion is, how do you replace steel? Sure you can cheery-oh along with some Iron Age steampunk bullshit but there's nothing to indicate a replacement for steel and its alloys once coal runs out, and I'm pretty sure steel is critical to industrial civilization.
the answer is cabron fiber. and you say, "but what about skyscrabers??" solution: nuke every city that has even one syskrapper
roseweird posted:all carbon fiber is made from petrochemicals
thats just the resin though, right? seems like something that could potentially be resourced from organic renewables
North Korea is sort of an example of what the post collapse world will look like. They didn't have access to the world markets so they developed Juche Fiber in place of what we use for plastics.
Lucille posted:Fiberglass is the only decent organic material and it requires oil.

you keep bringing up "large scale" while neglecting the possibilities of recreating industrial society on a small scale
Well it wouldn't work anyway, the point seems to be to create a ductile material for special applications not a replacement for steel, fiberglass, that kind of thing.

anyway i know no one is going to click that link so here is the PM i got from the admin shortly after registering and making a few posts in a thread looking for a game, it's amazing:
"I only realized today that you're in ghost mode, because I could see you all along - that is standard on forums for staff, but there's usually a clearer indication on other sorts of forum software than we use. Now, what follows is strictly not site policy, but my personal opinion, and you need not act on it or even reply.
Ghost mode, hiding your lurking presence from other members, is fair if everyone does it and fair if no one does it, but not fair if some do it. Information is power, and you deprive others of information they left available to you. In the years I was a common citizen, ghosts drove me batpoop; one of the things I love best about my nerdbadge is that 'I see dead people'.
You may have your own good reason for ghosting - and your reason(s) may well be none of my business in any of my capacities. I just wanted to share an opinion, and whatever you choose to do about it is okay."
youre dealing with a man who continually maintains an up-to-date site dedicated to playing a 14 year old pc strategy game. you deserve no mercy, and he will show you no mercy
