i haven't found anything academic that wasn't reductive or centered on "the weird mysteries of this hidden oriental kingdom" (other than the institute for the study of the juche ideal http://juche.v.wol.ne.jp/en.htm ), but to be honest I haven't really looked. kenji fujimoto, kim jong-il's sushi chef, wrote a few memoirs about his time in korea that, though sensationalist, ended up becoming the best source for the state department about north korea at the time. I don't think they're translated tho. barbara demick wrote a book called "nothing to envy" that has the stories of 6 emigres about which i've heard mixed but mostly positive things, and there's a book from another emigre called "This is Paradise!" about his north korean childhood, which I don't know much about. both of the above center on the experience of those in the country, as far as i know, and the thing we know the least about is life in pyongyang. guy delisle, a guy who does comic book travelogues, wrote a lil memoir about his time working there, but that's obviously not going to show in-depth what life is like for north koreans

all the politicians should just come out against it together. they stand together and fall together.
but really rudimentary logic deduces that because none have come out against it, therefore they all have something to hide. in such a situation it is no longer about "what if the public finds out what I've done," but instead becomes "out of all 535 members of congress, realistically how far up can my sins be on the list?" it is no longer a concern of kind, as the ubiquitous silence has eliminated the possibility of a distinction between the "honest" and "dishonest" politician. Now it is a matter of severity, and only one representative can have the worst history--only one needs to fall. raise up together and hope that your sins aren't the worst.
this actually works pretty well. not the best high but a worthy cheap one

well lets use common sense and think "what would a book with naked in the title be concerned with?" then we see its boring theory stuff instead of deep romance and i don't even know i stopped reading it's dumb.
