Let me summarize the US position on Syrian government and chemical weapons thus far:
1) The US government wants an investigation but is certain that the rebels did not use them.
2) The US governments calls on the Syrian government to allow a UN investigation but thinks that it does not make a difference because the government may have destroyed evidence.
3) The US government is certain that the regime used the weapons but wants an investigation.
4) The US government is certain but "almost certain" to be exact.
5) The US government believes that traces of chemical weapons can't be eliminated but now blames the Syrian government for possibly erasing the traces.
6) The US government believes that chemical weapons are an offensive weapons by definition but believes that Israeli chemical weapons are defensive weapons.
7) The US government calls for non-intervention by outsiders (like Hizbullah across the borders) as it considers bombing targets in Syria.
