what tom says about looking at the case more from a standpoint of institutional racism rather than a case about a bad racist man is well-taken, but that doesn't mean it's worthwhile or correct to defend zimmerman because of the "constant burglaries" or that zim can't be racist because he had black pupils.

and i don't think he took his gun with him to shoot trayvon, i think it made him feel like a big man to carry it so he thought he was safe. there's really no reason to suspect that he was like oh boy a black kid let me get my nigger shooting rifle and bag me one
look up the crime rate in sanford. it's comparable to compton. you are decontextualizing zimmerman's behavior and thereby displacing the racism from material conditions he lives in to a ideal image of a racist person you're projecting onto him. the implicit argument in trying to argue that zimmerman is an especially racist person is that someone who was not racist would not have been caught in the situation he was. i think it's a stronger argument to claim that he was not especially racist, but the racist social situation he lives in produced an event of racist violence. it doesn't matter how much you love or hate black people when you live in a such a society, and it can't be changed by watching your mouth and pretending you don't notice black kids creeping around your lily white apartheid community.
