the even more fundamental point is that mcdonald's can't exist without paying employees this little. the 1.25 billion dollar profit divided between the 761,000 mcdonalds employees is about $1700 each in a three month period. so if you're making $12k a year at mcdonalds, what they could actually pay is ~$16k. which is still not a living wage. we have to stop giving mcdonald's and others the benefit of thinking, "oh they COULD pay a living wage but they just don't WANT to." when the reality is they are designed to underpay workers.
the left gets tied up advocating legislative responses to these companies like increases in the minimum wage, when the goal should be shuttering mcdonald's for good.

well that's capitalism as a whole isn't it? capitalism cannot exist without extracting surplus value from labor so it's not as if shuttering mcdonalds will be a resolution. i also don't agree that they can't pay their workers a living wage, because they definitely could tho the cost would be subsidized by the consumer, which means a loss of wealth by the bourgeois and a smaller wealth gap between rich and poor. essentially, the left here is arguing in favor of a return to social democratic ideals of the 1950's, which isn't a solution to the sustainability of capitalism facing the impending energy, environmental and food/water crises. there are only two real options society can take moving forward (outside of silly deus ex machina proposals like perpetual motion or w/e found in atlas shrugged) either full communism or horrific regression of society as a whole.

hey that is informative. So mcdonald’s won't be supersizing paychecks any time soon then.
i'm gonna get shot down here but i have to ask. doesn’t a lot of the fault lie with the consumers? i mean it is people buying their products that provides the wages. i’m assuming that the average micky-d’s customer doesn’t care what gmo’s and additives they put into their bodies and would be pissed off if the dollar menu went bye-bye and a $2 menu was installed.
i know it is immensely more complicated than with things like 1. subsidies. 2. subsides. 3. subsidies...must be the free market (lolz) etc but at the end of the day it just seems like most people want their cheap, shitty food.
