basset hounds start out with so much energy but as they get older they become furniture pieces. congrats on your basement dog.

Every dog we walk gets to eat 1 cat per walk. That is a self-sustaining breeding population that bears litters as quickly as they can be eaten. Over a slow weekend like the one near july 4, the population can skyrocket to thousands of cats. Here's some trivium for you, guess what is the maximum number of cats you're allowed to have in your NYC residence?

Spoiler!

according to Alan Weisman's book, if humans disappeared tomorrow, domestic cats would flourish while dogs would die back quickly, because in many place cats are the only animal left in any significant numbers that fills the niche of a climbing predator in a certain range of size that allows it to hunt efficiently, while dogs have tons of surviving competitors for their niche. that's my depressing story about dogs

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I read that book and I think it's a load of crap. Some of what he says might be true in specific local regions but fail when applied generally. First of all he ignores the existence of many wild cat species throughout Eurasia and tropical America that fill similar niches as the house cat, but are better adapted to their specific environment. Also while dogs are likely to suffer extirpation in areas with similar native predators like temperate North America, the same can not be said for say, Australia, or South America. Although south america does have a native wolf it's behavior is more like that of a coyote, possibly leaving space for a large exhaustion pack hunter.

Basically he makes strong attention getting claims and ignores bumps and wrinkles in his pretty theories. Then again it was a simple fantasy largely designed to draw attention to our environmental impact so eh

Here are some South American Canids :3

The Maned wolf, he's got long legs so's he can get a good view of the Pampas where he lives. Makes for a strange contrast with the

Bush Dog, who has adorable stubby legs for running through the Amazonian undergrowth
