I think Mustang's argument can be made better with certain revisions. Of course making one's sole goal accelerating capitalist crises eschews the proletarian subject, and thereby eschews class struggle. And of course liberalism in itself isn't the problem, and has made various innovations that are very progressive in terms of democracy, anti-racism and anti-sexism, even if these are distinct from its Europe chauvinist origins. Furthermore, peasants under feudal or semi-feudal systems are certainly not as exploited as the working class under capitalism.

However, certain points against welfare can still be made. First, while crises don't lead to revolutions, exploitation does and people on welfare are not exploited. Even for those on welfare that are potential workers, it alleviates exploitation, and the proletariat simply cannot exist without exploitation. Saying anything that benefits the working class benefits proletariat is a huge mistake, one that I shall argue, leads to genocide.

To begin my second point, while peasants in China and Russia owned more of the means of production, this isn't what lead to revolution in these countries; what lead to revolution in these countries is their transformation into a horizontal nation-class by imperialism. However, the basis of this class was NOT exploitation, it was genocide or the risk of genocide. One of the important innovations made recently in revolutionary thought is that the basis of surplus value is not only the exploitation of workers but also genocide. I think this is best articulated by Maria Mies in her Patriarchy & World Accumulation when she states, "It is my thesis that this general production of life, or subsistence production-- mainly performed through the non-wage labor of women and other non-wage laborers as slaves, contract workers and peasants in the colonies-- constitutes the perennial basis upon which 'capitalist productive labor' can be built up and exploited." So when we allow workers to be content with merely being workers, this is what we allow to perpetuated. Furthermore, welfare leads to the internal consolidation of the settler nation-class that is necessary for this system to function: welfare encourages reproduction of "natural born" citizens to maintain the population without the help of immigration, it creates dependency upon the government rather than forming connections with the lumpen-proletariat (which I think are much more revolutionary than Marx realized), when crises arise exceptions can be created so that the liquidation of unwanted persons can more precisely fit the current needs of the bourgeoisie and what is political feasible for them, etc. There are very good reasons why social democracy is associated with fascism, materially they are extremely similar, with the small difference being that fascism has a narrower definition of the nation.
