the last three centuries: Great Success

We've developed virtually everything we know in every field of science from physics to biology to sociology to astronomy, we've developed medicine that actually works, destroyed polio and smallpox, which killed half a billion people in just the 20th century, tripled the human population and increased standard of living, developed feminism, Marxism, implemented popular democracy, developed historically unprecedented opposition to slavery, toppled the royals, and the horrors of the 20th century are negligible compared to those regularly committed in, the centuries prior

congratulations, we couldn't have done it without you goatstein

Hello OP, please update the original post with any recent occurrences or news as I would like to be kept abreast of the situation, with regard to God's status. Is God dead yet? Have we destroyed his kingdom and erected monuments of ipods and statues of steve jobs in His place? These are important questions that should be answered in the OP.

Thank you.

in the 19th century, we proclaimed the death of god. in the 20th, we proclaimed the death of man. there is a difference. we forgot about the Resurrection.

other cool stuff we did in the last 300 years: developed an appreciation for animal rights, made racism a thing that was at least openly frowned upon, ended the direct control of empires, which was a phenomenon that lasted for literally millennia, outlawed capital punishment in some areas, which again has existed since the dawn of civilization, constructed wonders that would baffle the pharaohs, and saved millions of souls from the death god yahweh. last 300 years = pretty ownage

a couple of million people died in the holocaust. two things: first, as a percentage of the population affected that was utterly negligible compared to, say, the sacking of carthage, the an shi rebellion, the Indian famines, the Huegenot wars, the taiping rebellion, japan for about 300 years, the Kitos war, or the conquest of the Aztecs, among innumerable other atrocities such as the daily rituals of the Aztecs, the Inquisition, Tepes' impaled body gardens or the usual battle tactics of the Romans or Mongols. second, it's really amazing that anybody is really puffed up about the Holocaust - certainly nobody would have given a shit about such a thing just 150 years prior, and it would have been something bragged about a century before that. the fact that we even care about atrocities, when we certainly and demonstrably did not beforehand, shows something fundamentally shifting

a cool thing about human history that most people, especially leftists, fail (deliberately) to comprehend is that the last couple centuries are less than ten percent of everything we can reasonably determine about humanity - the birth of jesus doesn't even mark the halfway point of competently recorded civilization. i think it's because they dont like to read delightful passages about the human race such as

I besieged and conquered the city… I captured many troops alive. I cut off of some their arms and hands. I cut off others their noses, ears and extremities. I gouged out the eyes of many troops. I made one pile of the living and one of heads. I hung their heads on trees around the city. I flayed as many nobles as had rebelled against me and draped their skins over the pile of corpses… I flayed many, right through my land and draped their skins over the walls. I cut off the heads of their fighters and built therewith a tower before the city. I burnt their adolescent boys and girls.

...preferring, of course, to believe that human wretchedness and cruelty was some late-modern phenomenon caused by whatever trendy poltergeist they'd like to blame

discipline remember when you claimed that slavery and imperialism were caused by the enlightenment? that's precisely what i'm talking about. you might as well say that the craters on the moon were caused by the election of barack obama

the holocaust was bad in modern terms, but what's six million compared to, say, wiping out virtually all of south america, or the taiping rebellion, or twenty million starving to death in india. and that's just relatively modern stuff, back in the olden days they'd genocide an entire people with sharp bits of metal and clubs, on foot, real community-togetherness projects, and be so proud of it they'd write about it in their holiest book. king Ashurbanipal's tale of his sackings involves him bragging about his loot like a 2nd-tier rapper
#178
imagine the calories you've got to burn hacking fifty thousand people to death in three days with old bronze swords. dudes in the old days were in good cardiovascular health, i'll give them that. and all the rape too! that'll tucker you out, and this was before coffee. just a solid work ethic driving our ancestors

Menelaus, my soft-hearted brother, why are you so concerned for these men? Did the Trojans treat you as handsomely when they stayed in your palace? No: we are not going to leave a single one of them alive, down to the babies in their mothers’ wombs—not even they must live. The whole people must be wiped out of existence, and none be left to think of them and shed a tear.
