also, in toronto the mayor rob ford has refused to directly answer questions about whether he uses crack cocaine. there is a video that some guys are trying to sell for $200,000 of ford allegedly using crack cocaine, and it seems like it'll get bought by gawker through reader funds.

question: is the hysteria surrounding rob ford racist?

rob ford has been a total creep his whole career and makes all sorts of racist and ignorant comments but he promised to cut car taxes and "end the gravy train" so everyone in the suburbs with a car voted for him.

then when he was elected it became apparent that the city was already devastated by cuts in services and transfers over the past few decades and had no way to cut taxes. so he ordered a study that suggested everything that could be cut without breaking provincial laws. like say there was no specific law saying they had to have an arts council, the report said it was okay to get rid of it. then ford made pretty clear he was going to take major steps towards implementing this basically right-wing nonsense plan and people started flipping out.

anti-cuts campaigners smartly focused on libraries because basically every liberal thinks libraries are awesome and that picking on librarians is like stealing the purse of an old lady. plus arts grants are popular with rich middle-brow types so people got mad in real life. there was also a lot of dumb stuff going on with the housing stock and shit. there was also a move to fuck over a long-standing transit plan that was popular with green types.

anyway ford did such a bad job making his case that he had a bunch of councilors defect and pull some significant cuts out of his budget. and at that moment everyone knew the ford agenda was basically dead. so the council started figuring out ways to undo parts of his agenda. it was basically a clear case of popular pressure derailing a right-wing scheme, so that's cool.

in a related move, at the provincial level the government hired a prominent economist to come up with ways of reducing the deficit, basically giving him (drummond) carte blanche to say we needed to gut whatever, while prohibiting him from considering revenue increases. this was basically in liberal response to the ford agenda, trying to find ways to build consensus over social cuts so the liberals could stay in power without scaring creditors too much.

but interestingly drummond couldn't find much fat at all. like he said that the basic public health and education system were fairly well-run. his report recommended a lot of cuts, but he recommended politically impossible things with respect to cutting certain education programs, so that was ignored. the only piece that got through was public sector wage restraint. so the government picked a fight with teachers, and it's generally believed they completely lost. teachers fought back and positioned themselves to destroy the liberals and the liberals backed down, the premier resigned, and a new premier was selected that quickly mended the rift with teachers and reached out to the social-democrats.

anyway, basically, there was an attempt to impose broad and deep austerity on toronto and it mostly fell apart due to resistance. obviously they'll keep trying and things aren't exactly peachy, but it's cool to see.

I love this guy...fighting for his job; a job he has done well apparently and he is being made out to be the devil in front of the whole world. So what he was in a drunken stupor and made a stupid decision, who hasn't? There are priests out there still preaching who have done far worse i'm sure. "I have to take legal action against the waiter that said I was doing lines at the Bier Markt, that is outright lies. That is not true," he said. The documents include descriptions by former staff and others of Ford's alleged behaviour.

Ford also denied that the blond woman described in the court documents is a prostitute.

"She’s a friend and it makes me sick how people are saying this," he said. "I can’t put up with it anymore."

Ford then shocked reporters when he went on to refute the allegation that he had made an inappropriate sexual advance to a woman who was on his staff at the time.

The woman "said I wanted to eat her p—y," Ford said before cameras.

"I’ve never said that in my life to her. I would never do that. I'm happily married. I've got more than enough to eat at home."

Ford is also alleged to have driven while drunk, which he addressed, upon emerging from his office a few minutes later, saying: "I might have had some drinks and driven."

He went on to remark he is "not perfect" and disappeared into an elevator.
