the drinking culture in australia

i think this is the part that would get me. from what i can tell from visiting australians it is really unhealthy and bingey and obnoxious

i went out drinking in Hollywood in February (i'd been told it was a sleaze pit) and was absolutely astonished by how well-behaved, sociable and respectful everyone was: from patrons to cops to bouncers and bartenders

I Have a Prescription For Uppers I Probably Shouldn’t Now

Nightmares aren’t a problem if you don’t sleep

You’re right though about the sleep. I didn’t have those nightmares too much but when I quit: boy howdy was it strange having vivid dreams again

I also get sleep paralysis/terrors a bit but if you ride the wave it can be fun and enriching

Adulthood is going great for me. I have a wonderful wife and soon I'll be a professor and get paid 6 figures starting out to do whatever research I want to (within orthodox economics). Six years after that I'll hopefully have tenure and I can really do and teach whatever I feel like and make a king's ransom. Just imagine how many pairs of jeans I could donate to lf. Designer pants beyond reckoning.

lmao you think tenure will be around in 6 years. I'm calling out your bullshit story

what are you on about khamzek. tenure is around 6 years. assistant professors are appointed to two three year terms after which they need to get tenure or wash out. although they can apply for a clock stoppage for a year to put it on hold. source: my JOB

adjuncts arent assistant professors though

actually adjuncts arent even relaly considered part of the faculty and get paid less than the GRAs lol

The real reason people go into academia is for fame and prestige though, adjuncts will never get published and become a celebrity.
#146
well yeah you can call em whatever and give em whatever rank i guess but they're still gap fillers hired because the school doesnt have a big enough faculty for all its teaching outlays. so they're not tenure track people but part-timers with the sole responsibility of being instructor for some course... as opposed to the full faculty whose duties include research especially, also service and program development along with the instructional responsibilities. abnd also instructional responsilities beyond specific courses. anyway when Aspie Economist talks about becoming a professor and getting tenure in six years i assume he's not talking about being an adjunct, and if he's not, he's right on the mark with it being six years according to the literal requirements/rules, at least in my experience

they sound inane and cost ridiculous amounts of money

They're famous within their academic clique. Additionally they treasure the power and hierarchy they have over teachers assistants and staff.

Picture this in your mind- imagine if you could post everything you're posting now, but it will get published in reputable academic journals, people will sit and listen to you at conferences, and you can force your students to read it and give glowing reviews. Wouldn't anyone like that?

hey dumbass a phd doesn't guarantee you a tenure-track job and nobody under the wide blue sky gets a phd because they want to be an adjunct

lol @ the idiotic reactionary idea of people making some rational economic choice to do essentially the same job as tenure-track faculty but for less money with zero research support and zero job security
#154
by dumbass i mean myself, a person who is "pursuing" a phd in the desperate hope of being one of the last into the tenure lifeboats before the ship of american higher education slips beneath the icy waves of the for-profit sea for ever and ever
#155
i sort of assume that people who don't get tenure are betas though. tom will get tenure, for example, because he's not a schmuck.
#156
those who can't do, teach
those who can't teach, learn
#157
the chances of getting tenure are low but that's because you are fighting against thousands of trotskyists and homosexuals.

yeah idk how anyone expects this to happen even now. the adjunct thing is too seductive for all the businesspeople who run educational institutions now. why would you ever want tenured employees? sorry, education is ruined forever. it's cool to read about how it used to be though
