that seemed like a pretty good presentation tbh. obviously there was a pro-US agenda but it was basically just a informative presentation on soviet media, didnt shrink away or handwave the things they were saying and didn't make any bizarre claims or inferrences. it's undeniable that their conclusion, that the soviets were bent on portraying the US as horribly as possible, is true. the truth of these portrayals isn't really debated in a serious way in the video, its pretty much assumed that you believe them to be liars and frauds, but there's no case made for that in the video. seemed like the purpose of it was to inform diplomatic corps on the portrayal of our country in soviet media

they still ask you if you are or have ever been a member of certain parties or campus orgs during clearance processes iirc

yes, to get a govt security clearance you can not have had membership in any sort of group dedicated to the overthrow of the US govt. pretty outrageous imo

ya I found it absolutely hilarious because like there's parts where they're like "Pravda keeps accusing us of keeping political prisoners. however our media stopped talking about these cases years ago!"

e: ahahahaha oh yeah "minor events that get little attention in US media are presented in the Soviet Union as typical." for example someone murdered a union organizer and we didn't talk about it at all but Pravda wrote about it in a series on labor suppression in the US

29.1 Are you now or have you EVER been a member of an organization dedicated to terrorism, either with an awareness of the organization's dedication to that end, or with the specific intent to further such activities?

29.2 Have you EVER knowingly engaged in any acts of terrorism?

29.3 Have you EVER advocated any acts of terrorism or activities designed to overthrow the U.S. Government by force?

29.4 Have you EVER been a member of an organization dedicated to the use of violence or force to overthrow the United States Government, and which engaged in activities to that end with an awareness of the organization's dedication to that end or with the specific intent to further such activities?

29.5 Have you EVER been a member of an organization that advocates or practices commission of acts of force or violence to discourage others from exercising their rights under the U.S. Constitution or any state of the United States with the specific intent to further such action?

29.6 Have you EVER knowingly engaged in activities designed to overthrow the U.S. Government by force?

it seems entirely possible to both enjoy the irony of the matter of fact presentation style painting obviously true things as propaganda (soviet media tells their people that america is dysfunctional!) whilst simultaneously recognizing that it indeed performed the informing function that you describe for Reagan

yep, though again, they didnt say it was just "propaganda" as in made up lies, but simply demonstrated a contrast in emphasis in the countries' respective medias. it didnt claim that any of those stories the soviets like(d) to highlight(ed) were untrue (past tense because communism is dead forever)

not explicitly at least, because the intended audience was reagan, and there's little point in endlessly rehashing basic assumptions about reality that both creator and viewer accept (but enough about my post history)
#28
I'm not really sure the final audience was Reagan. like he probably watched em and had a good chuckle but considering the effort involved in the production I can't imagine CIA just obliging his thing for videos if that's all they were for. these were probably put together from the precursors to materials used for some other information or psychological operations. possibly used for briefing lower-level agents working on other things?

the role of vehicles and other modes of transportation (and attendant infrastructure and supply requirements) in defining, enabling, and producing ruling and overseer classes is a pretty interesting historical subject that I've always wanted to spend more time looking into. analyzing it merely in terms of time/resource tradeoffs isn't much; how one gets around shapes consciousness in major ways
