thing is 'dead ken' is literally not different at all to how i am irl, i say stupid shit to be contrary and ramble about theory and talk about myself incessantly and if im in understanding company i do my ironic antisemitism schtick and people still tolerate me, its really weirddoubtful. of course when I post I feel like It's Really Me Posting sometimes but I know better.
me too. i think its just the way the medium manifests the Real Me. like i dont intentionally craft a seperate online persona but it just sort of works out that way and it doesnt feel like a different person but it obv is

i asked talked to him about changing the actual templates beyond just changing colors via css, but he's on a tight schedule, and if anybuddy knows Python i'm sure he could use help with such things
well i mean, i'd be OK with changing templates but i don't want to bring the site down to do it. one possibility is that I can copy everything over to a new account and use that as a test server. then we can muck everything up like crazy if you want. this would mean another five bux a month, although i was thinking of getting a new account anyways for that SECRET PROJECT that i had been working on before my dissertation started taking up 100% of my time.

see, something like this would be awesome but its not as easy to implement as you'd think, at least automatically. you still need pull posts from a database and insert them into a template. so, like, first of all? which posts go where? how do you move out a column? how does the conversation flow?
then there's page-display issues. what do you do with images smaller than those boxes? (although maybe something like what badgame.net does with big images would work here; i'd have to figure that out).then, if you have a horizontal layout, then thats nice for people using big LCDs, but fucks people who are using laptops, much less cellphones. i mean, not to say that this layout is the best for cellphones either, but it is at least easily transferable to the lofi version.
we could maybe have different thread layouts for different threads, chooseable at thread creation or something. the way the templates are set up now, this wouldn't be too hard i think. but you'd have to show me in like html how this would work...

welp i was more leading towards the lack of ingenuity in the data architecture arranging our discussions on the internet.
long story short: ITS HARD
also its difficult to do otherwise due to the textual nature of the medium. in a textual medium, IMHO, you can either bias the medium towards long posts, i.e. forums like this or in the extreme case places like the exile or salon.com, or you can bias it towards short posts, i.e. like chat. in the latter case there's only so much you can do; whether you are IRC or maple story you're still just chatting in posts.
so, some possibilities are changing the way linked posts are displayed and breaking away from just pure text. as far as display goes, you could think of all kinds of stuff. like, what if all posts were little boxes that expanded when you clicked on them. well then you could lay them out in all kinds of crazy ways. the OP could be the center of a sun, for instance, and thread replies could spread out like rays from its corona... or you could have weird hierarchical tree formats, or all kinds of shit. but stuff like this is not easy; it not only would require a lot more backend coding, but some pretty slick javascript and html layout work. basically, its a lot of work!
as far as breaking away from pure text, one possibility is that a post box could also include a little mspaint doodle box. you type up your text, then hit preview, and then doodle in the doodle box. the doodle-image would be aligned directly over your text so you could circle crap, or illustrate stuff, or whatever. but again, more crazy coding.
the first step is probably for me to clean out the git reposititory and upload the most recent version of all this code, that way people like yourself would have an easier time playing with it.

we should write tihs into a short story LoL a cyberpunk beckett if u will
On the other hand, online reputations are extremely important and I basically ignore things from posters who have shown themselves to be boring or uninformed in the past. Most threads in lf I would skim until Dm or Impper or Idiot or Aerdil or one of the posters who have gained a reputation in my mind of being intelligent and having something different to say showed up. The reason a forum like revleft doesn't work is because none of the posters have any reputation or evolving discourse with each other so every thread is the same thing about how many people Stalin killed. Kasama doesn't work for the opposite reason imo, the main personality behind it is too strong and so everything becomes tainted by his beliefs and actions irl.
I guess the ideal form personalities are able to separate the internet from real life but not make it so separate that the internet just becomes a dump for irl stuff and a way to relieve stress. I dunno, the internet is still a very new place and I think the ideal forum for discussion has yet to be reached. I like most of the posters here but there's still something missing which prevents me from becoming engaged fully even though I can't fully articulate it.
what we have here is something a little different - most of the people here stood out from the marketplace of posters, cultivated personalities, developed posting styles, advanced a certain kind of discourse and certain programmes of ideas; but in the absence of a marketplace there's almost a lack of an imperative for the posters here to stand out. in short, there isn't much of an audience, and the posting marketplace is exceptional precisely because there is a large group of audience-participants who can watch and engage with the text that's being formed, and in so doing serve a certain positive function even in the absence of a unique personality or a good set of ideas
