Hey getfiscal you’ll like this: I was reading a book called Stasiland the other day and the author was looking at old videos of a government-mandated 1950s GDR youth dance called “the Lipzi”, named after Leizpig which was apparently the trendy city of east Germany (rofl) back then. Anyway the author is watching it and trying to figure out why it’s so weird: there’s moves from tango, bossa nova, the Charleston, all thrown together in this unnatural and arbitrary way, and then she realizes the key is that it’s been specifically designed so no matter what’s happening with your arms and legs, the hips don’t move at all.

In a 2007 episode of the Charlie Rose show, Rose was interviewing the actor and comedian Steve Martin about his memoir Born Standing Up. They talked about the realities of Martin's rise. In the last five minutes of the interview, Rose asks Martin his advice for aspiring performers.

"Nobody ever takes note of -my advice-, because it's not the answer they wanted to hear," Martin said. "What they want to hear is ‘Here's how you get an agent, here's how you write a script,' . . . but I always say, ‘Be so good they can't ignore you.' "

This mantra I always hear about being told you have to go to college doesn’t seem like much of a defence of anything. There’s a lot of mantras we’re told growing up: Buy pogs to be cool, me a massive dickhead to women, war is glorious.

You don’t have to believe them.

i choose to believe you a massive dickhead to women, what do you think about that?

im going to be the first one in aermieca to start a big business. you heard me. right off the bat. im thinking big. it wont be long before ""dumbgay post s by this guy""" becomes a sensation from coast to coast. in fact im already test marketing here on the rhizone. the only issue is how to monetize. im thinking Hacks. well, until next time folks.

the upper middle classes seem to have reached, if only briefly, a weird kind of communism where they all do have common ownership of the means of production (poor people) and they do various types of illusionary makework according to their serendipitous predilections

If you go to the mines in western Australia as a 19 year old with a trade qualification straight out of high school you pretty much start on six figures, crazy

Georgia/Tennessee/Alabama. It's not to say the situation is horrible, but it's definitely not as secure a position as it used to be (and if you're a new hire you're going to be paid far less than you would be pre-recession and will be worked like a dog).

This thread is good. I work at a job in which everyone except me is black or an immigrant and every manager and person higher up is white. I like my coworkers cause they're real working class, but dpesite trying to be anti-humanist it personally bothers me that shit is so terrible in this country. Anyway the more things change the more they stay the same. Also my job is horrible and makes me want to kill myself.

I guess they're pretty reliant on the construction industry and such over there.

I know the government here is trying to make it easier for skilled american workers to come, so if they've got the goods this is uh, pretty good money?

http://www.news.com.au/business/tradies-do-it-tough-to-earn-260000/story-e6frfm1i-1225852543333

Although West Australian resource sector workers are perceived as the best remunerated tradesmen, they are well behind the elite class of offshore sparkies, The Australian reports.

Employed on fly-in-fly-out rosters, they work seven consecutive 12-hour shifts, living on the platforms before they return to the mainland for a week off.

As well as an attractive hourly rate, they employees receive a raft of allowances for shift work, rotating between day and night rosters, and weekend penalties.

And with overtime, their total annual remuneration package can range between $250,000 and $260,000.

only if you've never worked a real job. these are people who will remain in the working class their whole lives, have no privilege to go to college or have kids at 30 when they're ready, have a natural distaste for management and corporate "have fun at work" culture, and do hard labor for little pay with no benefits while people whine about how bored they are getting paid to surf facebook all day.

working class culture as it existed in the 30s hasn't really disappeared, however it become even more divided across racial lines and white socialist unions no longer exist. thats not to say the OP is whiny or anything, the alienation of modern "immaterial" labor is sickening to the human spirit, but the divide between bourgeois culture and proletarian culture is alive and well.
