Two years ago, the Central Intelligence Agency announced it was creating a center to analyze the geopolitical ramifications of “phenomena such as desertification, rising sea levels, population shifts and heightened competition for natural resources.”

But whatever work the Center on Climate Change and National Security has done remains secret.

In response to National Security Archive scholar Jeffrey Richelson’s Freedom of Information Act request, the CIA said all of its work is “classified.”

"Sir, we think you should see this. A giant cloud of smoke has formed in the South Pacific. We checked with linguistics and confirmed it says "There is no god but god and Muhammad is his messenger" in Arabic."

"We knew this day would come. Classify this immediately. And get me the President on the phone. And when you're done that, start praying."

makes perfect sense

why would the CIA even spend any of its own money on this

its real strange how the whole military/intelligence apparatus is just off the radar of Real American Conservatives no matter what they do, like, immune from real talk about budget cuts, spending money on the assumption that global warming is real (NASA, etc. get raked over the coals for it but the CIA/military continue to do studies about the impact of climate change and no one makes a fuss)

its strange when you look at the history of other power mad empires and their military/intelligence stuff it becomes just as silly as everything else, everyone knows about the roman emperors ideas and hitlers ridiculous weapons, etc. but in america's case its like the neocons and christian dominionists etc. that want to impose this ridiculous public ideology still have the military existing in some sort of reality-biased realpolitik world. like, what fred phelps is doing is the logical extension of american christianism, trashing the military for complying with the sunset of DADT, but even otherwise reactionary americans still hate and despise phelps for what he does

it would be cool if at least some top-secret military intelligence subunit had a female AI you could have a conversation with like that

i bet if anyone ever did come up with conversational-level AI, after a bunch of focus testing they'd realize that they had to make it a male voice so people would quit sitting around talking to the hot semi-omniscient virtual girl

a combo of the two naturally, but it really does make perfect sense.

assuming that an environmental crisis of some kind of is looming, early knowledge about where it's gonna hit first, which markets will suffer and which won't, which industries will collapse and which will be able to adapt etc etc can allow a regime to consolidate its power and ensure its position is not affected (or even improved).
