well im glad religion sure seems to prevent people from doing those things much more often that those philobots pouring over their dumb sophisticated words to better understand the world instead of trusting some chumps from countless eons ago who were primarily attempting to consolidate their own power-base

don't murder? don't charge usury? feed the poor? sounds like a bunch of plainspeak trash. here let me write a big book about it using terms that will incorporate the same principles but make it seem as though I came up with these ideas through independent study and the use of Reason

if you think that dwelling on what morality is is for chumps then why did your celestial kim jong il whisper a book to anyone. couldn't we have figured out that murder was wrong for ourselves without spirit-beings flipping out about wire hangers.

heh... bloated terminology bots dumber than chumps on the subway *snorts, wipes snot on conservatively layered dress, other people on the bus edge away from this crazy ball of frumpiness*

i was walking down market street today and there were a few dudes desperately yelling with a megaphone at the tourists trying to get on the cable car that god hates them and they were all going to hell, seemed like a good use of time to me

obviously not

so morality is both so obvious that it requires no introspection but also so impossible to develop organically that it needs to be imposed by a control freak spirit lord.

If morals are innate to the human condition, one could only corrupt them by teaching replacements or additions to them.

If morals are not innate to the human condition, then from where does the authority to teach them originate?

Evil, what we call Evil, must ever exist while man exists: Evil, in the widest sense we can give it, is precisely the dark, disordered material out of which man's Freewill has to create an edifice of order and Good.

conservative theism and rationalist critiques of it both piss me off

don't murder, don't steal & do observe the sabbath.

these things are equally important.

discipline, in the jewish faith, which i adhere to, the sabbath is not strictly functional, it is not because it is a "good idea" to take a day off or some such, rather it is because we must follow the often arbitrary dictates of G-d. These dictates, which are properly mysterious, are a matter of fear of the creator, not guidance for a good life. Your position is nearly blasphemous.

can i switch "observe the sabbath" to "don't utter thy lord's name in vain"?

it is arguably even more ridiculous.

hahaha maybe it's like supposed to be some kind of future prophesy... like maybe "The Lord's Name" is really some kinda late 21st century street-slang for a garage-cooked adaptation of a chemical called loraditiminame, a drug notable for both its quick inducement of euphoric bliss and its original intention as the first phase of a "treatment plan" for elderly patients that have "exhausted their litigational options" in obama's death panel bureaucracy. and its like, really good stuff. REALLY good stuff, ya know? and of course, as sweet a spot as that wouldnt stay the secret of nurses on the night-shift for long, once Big Phrama finally realized what they had on their hands at least, eventually becoming America's most epic epidemic of all time thanks to the power of BP's money and marketing. "the lord's name" and the rest of its religiously-themed nomenclatura become so popular and widespread that the mainstream meanings of traditionally sacrosanct words are superseded by their druggie equivalents... like "praying" now refers to the lollygagging "ullhghhhhhehh" sound that you make when that juice first hits yer brain, while "singing psalms" is a kink that involves shooting the needle into your tongue and then extravenously transferring the high to your partner with a lick, whistle, and AMEN. and so on and so forth as it also goes with "reading the gospel", "speaking confession", "receiving communion", etc. so obviously analogous and so obviously gross that we really don't really need to dwell on them, and besides, everybody knows this stuff anyways, there was even an episode of late 21st century Ellen about it.

and so thus it is that The Church withers away, as those who would wish to uphold tradition can no longer even find their dignity in doing so, and a whole generation comes of age without its Good and Just laws to guide them into strong men and women. we all become Last Men, RIP the human race.

If you want to learn to become a good man or woman then listen to your elders and study history, art, philosophy, etc. Rationally critique your own behavior. Life experience and age will also make you wiser. Religion really doesn't play any part in that and only serves as a rather fundamental diversion which can disrupt the formation of a healthy mind and worldview.
