Newsweek is a pretty weird story over the last decade and a half.

Once upon a time, Newsweek was TIME Magazine's #1 competitor for the magazine that sits on a table in the dentist's office. With the death of print, Newsweek was bought by the Bezos machine; then the Bezos people sold Newsweek—already failed and laden with debt—to IAC, Sidney Harman's racket, for $1.00 and assumption of that debt; the new owners merged Newsweek with the Daily Beast site and renamed them, horrendously, "The Newsweek Daily Beast Company", a sort of preemptive vandalism of the epitaph for print news magazines; then IAC sold Newsweek to International Business Times, a creepy & cloistered privately-owned operation, but retained control of the Daily Beast, legally de-merging them; IBT then renamed itself Newsweek Media Group after its acquisition; finally, IBT split itself on paper into IBT Media and Newsweek...... one day before the Manhattan District Attorney kicked in the door of the Newsweek offices and indicted the Newsweek Media Group CEO, with the raid leading to a guilty plea from the CEO over defrauding lenders.

The short version is, I am not really surprised that Newsweek has apparently become a pay-for-play outlet for potato-headed randos to write bizarre stories about their wives' friends at Georgetown. I'm sure part of its rehabilitation will be to launder CIA talking points to anyone old enough to recognize its brand. Though, in its defense, that was also much of Newsweek's purpose back in prehistoric times, when it actually made money for anyone lol.

..............the other headlines from U.S. media outlets are equally absurd. It really is a shift compared to e.g. reporting on Syria, if only a shift to a previous mode of reporting. On Syria, these same sources were at least reporting that ISIS & friends were losing ground to the Syrian army when that happened.

If you don't follow what I'm talking about, I don't blame you, because unless you're paying attention to other sources, it's nearly impossible to parse what the headlines above are reporting, that is, not only has the Kiev government lost Luhansk, but its military has been completely driven out.

That's what "new positions" mean here. They're the "position" of the Kiev military following its defeat and withdrawal.

I've heard of "advance to the rear" and all that, but a "shift" to the "holding line", when the line is broken and the military is routed, that's a new one I think.

also, for anyone looking for accurate reporting on the war, The New Atlas gives frequent updates. i don't think he's a socialist but his understanding of geopolitics and US imperialism is spot on and he doesn't typically engage in the kind of petty drama others do.

I looked up the writer who got the actual byline, he's some fat hogboy Chicagoite whose LinkedIn is mostly him bragging about being a mouthpiece for the cops, and I'm beginning to suspect the other writers were credited for this article as a way of proving to their cop contacts that they are all good little piglets themselves and can all be used for dead drops of future stories about how no one should bother trying to hold cops responsible for anything.
