The Enterprise has a chapel in Balance of Terror where I guess Kirk & McCoy & Scotty go to pray to the LORD Jesus Christ. At the beginning Kirk is officiating a wedding, then at the end he's there as the former wife-to-be mourns the man she would have married. It's so good

my favorite part of that plotline about her estranged son is how the show pretty much never mentions it again so it was a completely pointless foray for the viewers like half the plotlines that ultimately make little sense on that terrible show

i started rewatching ds9 since its been more than a decade since i last did so and holy shit doctor bashir is a hilariously bad actor in the first two seasons. the episode where he gets possessed by the mental energy of a crime boss is rough. glad he eventually took acting classes or whatever.

part 2 of "Birthright" is such a Rene Echevarria script in how it unfolds back at the viewer, a former prison camp where the guards married prisoners and the whole thing seems real fucked up on its face, but then you figure out that the prisoners chose to build lives for themselves rather than be treated as the living dead back home, and the audience-identification main-cast character from Braga's part 1 is still low-key angry about everything, and you're like Oh right, our hero is also kind of fucked up so...

my semi-rigorous post on Newsweek in the other thread has made me consider writing a similar post about the Star Trek property's recent history, because getting my posting hands around that topic would probably be a baptism by fire for understanding private media ownership nowadays... If my murky memory serves, it involves a post-merger split between Paramount and CBS in which the companies literally traded names, so that CBS—or rather the company that owned everything CBS won in the divorce—renamed itself Paramount, while the newly split-off Paramount became CBS. No guarantees but you've been warned.

the Garak scene people always bring up nowadays is from “The Way of the Warrior”, but the best overall as an episode is probably “The Wire”. My personal favorite is “Civil Defense”.

I found by "By Inferno's Light" (Garak has claustrophobia) to be odd in that it was extremely understanding and sympathetic to mental illness, and somewhat unintuitively Worf was one of the surrogates for sympathy, as opposed to playing the usual chauvinist Klingon heel
