i was pretty critical of Occupy at the time, and while CHAZ has a lot of the same issues, i've come to realize two things in the preceding years:

- movements can be misguided strategically, but still discover useful things tactically. the idea of indefinitely "occupying" a bunch of random city parks with anarchists and yoga teachers was always going to be a failure. but they did learn useful things, like the advantage of having simultaneous protests in cities across a country, instead of traveling to one city like the anti-globalization protests of the late 90's/early 00's

- if you look at successful revolutions, just about all of them were preceded by some failed attempts from various groups struggling to find the right strategy and ideological line. easy to bash them for not following "State and Revolution" to the letter, but... it's just part of the process! it's like watching a kid put together a block tower, you can lecture them all day about how to do it right, or you can let them try a bunch of different stuff and figure out what doesn't work, and offer to help as needed

While true, in this case we have much more tactically advanced & inspiring actions across the entire country from people who aren't white anarchists, so this particular failure seems a lot less relevant than the many other failures currently occurring in the prairie fire. unless it's specifically in your own backyard.

occupy demands some historical attention still, because for better or worse it was a spark in an empty field and one of the only frames a discussion of practical action in the developed world could orient around. this is very distinct from what's occurring in seattle, which is a late-stage tailist development capitalising on already existing widespread and organically militant unrest of even greater focus and efficacy

further to bnw's points, i would caution against conflating CHAZ/CHOP with BLM as a whole, as you seem to do here - the lesson you single out as an example was learned from the actual protests, not whatever CHOP is.

regarding CHAZ, one of the things we learned at occupy ICE portland, that i guess didnt catch on, is that all the victory happens in the first few days and then you have a bunch of liberals and leftists with nothing to do except fear the inevitable. there needs to be an ultimatum and a time limit. the tactics on the ground, whether they lead to middle schoolers getting shot or not, are kind of irrelevant if the police control the tempo, which as noted above, once it turns into a waiting game, they do

kinda doubful the protests are not achieving anything material at this point. i wonder if feds/cops know this and are trying to draw them out to use them as an excuse for abducting and incarcerating participants. shit is going to get so, so much worse in the coming months, and when it does, it would be convenient for them to have the competent organizers off the streets and away from the action... not sure though, could be totally wrong

Spokeswoman of the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, Karla West told News 2 they’re in the process of cleaning the chalk off with a hose.

West said officials will be reviewing surveillance video for any evidence or anyone to prosecute.

reminds me of the vandalism case they tried to bring against some dude in san diego who wrote anti-capitalist messages in chalk outside bank of america branches and the judge refused to allow the 1st amendment or free speech as a defense. the jury voted to acquit.

The town crank here has shifted into chalking covid hoax stuff down at the Walmart. He was going on little missions to chalk up the parking lot but was eventually caught and cited for "criminal trespassing." What gave him away is that he drives a car covered in flat earth slogans along with little science experiments he makes himself mounted to the roof demonstrating his theories, and trailing a giant American flag behind it. And he has several of these vehicles which he parks in different parts of town every morning to spread his flat earth message. Not exactly subtle. It's just chalk, though...

The experience with FRSO shows that what you need to counteract it isn't a legal strategy, it's a mass movement strategy. The infrastructure is there to mobilize people so I'm optimistic this will get squashed
