U.S. officials believe China covered up the extent of the coronavirus outbreak — and how contagious the disease is — to stock up on medical supplies needed to respond to it, intelligence documents show.

it's a ruling doctrine of the big business press in the U.S. that the less journalists reveal about sources, the more reliable the information, because that brand of journalist is ideally a sociopath who thinks the propaganda passed to them by intelligence & security agencies is the secret truth of the world, uncovered by their canny cultivation of sources

then an open admission here of what they see their role being in covid times:

i mean a good commie knew this already but what i love is how it's all so half-assed and lazy like every other thing in this fucking country lmao. we had social distanced VE day street parties tho where everyone dressed like secretaries from the 1940s so that's something i guess.

There's something about Chinese Foreign Ministry quotes that almost have this getfiscal-esque structure to them that would drive the average Redditor into a rage. Like I think some communists online in the West would like them to broadcast cartoons of a huge muscular dude with a red hammer knocking off the head of the Statue of Liberty, but instead you get a disarming cartoon of Lego doctors staring at the Statue of Liberty and saying "don't drag China into US domestic politics to distract from failure to receive Chinese assistance. Please look inside yourself and chill out."

Thought about it again and decided to call this approach "Resistance Is Embarrassing." It's not about threatening vague consequences down the line, but pointing out that by persisting in your irresponsible and foolish actions you are only embarrassing yourself further. And that is sad and causing me to smh.

Anyways, it felt like there was a tonal shift in China's Foreign Ministry's Information Department lately, and I think I pegged the shift to last summer when Hua Chunying took a leave of absence for a refresher course at the Central Party School, wrote an article in the school's newspaper at the end of her trip, then soon after promoted an aggressive diplomat named Lijian Zhao from his post at the embassy in Pakistan. CGTN has also gotten bolder and Max Blumenthal was on it the other day. Normally that channel has been like T.V. Xanax. A real snoozer, but I guess they saw their target audience as airport lounges and the business traveler class, with the idea being to softly lull that class into viewing China as a safe, reliable place to invest. But given the anti-China sentiment stoked by U.S. politicians and media, they have to adjust. I think they need to swap out the anchors though for some more exciting personalities like RT does with characters like Jesse Ventura. Someone get Terry Crews on the phone.

The best thing CGTN could do would be to invest in better quality streams. Their presentation generally shows they understand the value of following international news broadcast standards but if you try and watch their web stream on anything bigger than a phone it looks like blocky interlaced garbage. Just saying.

i love this one for many reasons but especially because the premise is that it's cool and good that the US is keeping its coronavirus vaccine research secret

so this story from about 3 weeks ago is getting a retread, perhaps because the 'it came from a wuhan lab!!' nonsense fell flat so quickly. exact same story but this time via the FBI, and UK intel appears to have thrown their hat in the ring:

my original objection still stands, of course, with an addendum: how would 'stealing' vaccine research impede vaccine development, exactly? i love how these claims are made with no explanation and a pliant press simply reports it sans critique, nodding, "mmm yes, china bad, hackers bad".

It's not a big deal if China steals the vaccine but whether they'll give it to the bad guy for dark side points. Unfortunately their stream is too choppy & low-res to know for sure.

if you work as a scientist in the US you have an obligation to leak everything. scientists leaking crucial atomic research regarding the construction of atom weapons to the communists in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in the 40s and 50s saved the human race from one sided nuclear war. please cc xi jingping or any other non-amerikkkan statesman in your emails thanks.

It's quite a thing that modern day Philippine slavers have a daughter who, when given the opportunity, shouts that her parents are modern day Philippine slavers from the rooftops for her own personal media class clout.

Daughter is a staff writer at the New Yorker (Surprised it's not The Atlantic, tbh). Here's her implausible lead...

What she means to say is "my parents don't even know about this, it's me trying to raise my social media profile."

This thread has some facts of the parents' case.

The whole thing reads great to the tune of "Cat's in the Cradle."

quite a hilarious little dance the cnn guy is doing here, trying to explain that the protests are genuine and not just something putin whipped up, while emphasising that putin DOES try and do stuff like that, it's just not really a thing right now, or maybe it is, but its not significant, but watch out for election meddling, which is definitely a very big deal???
