wait like, assigned seating? is this a UK thing because for us in primary education we were entrusted with enough agency to, y'know, just pick a chair and... sit down... bam, seating plan done, one weird trick

forgot to mention last time teaching stuff came up that a canadian friend of mine recently taught in Slough for a year, and fucking bailed at the first tactful opportunity because while she loved her students and fellow staff the education system is apparently a medieval nightmare

#8617
in my experience in Canada it depends on the teacher, I remember having assigned seats sometimes. And then sometimes they'd reorganize things in an attempt to stop us talking so much or having fun or gaining sentience or whatever. Same reason they juggle around what unit you're assigned to in modern armies

the other day i spent my last five euros on a paperback of the second part of carr's socialism in one country so i didn't have any money for the metro then got nabbed by three armed cops for hopping the turnstile at the saint michel metro station (should have walked one stop up to odeon, never anyone there). but i gave them my u.s. driver's license so they're going to send the 110 euro fine to my address there (there's nobody there and i won't pay it).

anyway haven't been anywhere for a few days because now i'm massively paranoid about being fined even though i've been hopping it for the past three months and when you think about it even if i paid the fine it would work out to cheaper than a monthly pass would have been.

waiting for checks to arrive and being broke as hell and eating potatoes and onions and rice out of massive cheap bags with good butter as my only indulegence...the arab butcher's up the road has cheap rabbit meat so once i scrape up the rent for March i'll see what i have left and then hopefully make some rabbit/potato/onion pie for a change. might be time to get a normal job again.

anyway flipping through carr is always interesting. i've been mostly reading the part about revitalizing the soviets and it's always a thrill to read how much commitment there was to local democracy, and the effort that was made to implement it and encourage it, and the vast amount of criticism that was flying around in the country in all the party organs and regional papers etc. the soviet project was such a fascinating experiment. i have the two parts of the volume 'foundations of a planned economy' at my grandmother's house in England so I think when i scrape some more cash together i'm going to get on the train and go get all my books from there and poke around bookstores trying to get all 14 volumes of carr's series and read them front to back.

um, like assigning seating is one of the most important things in a class. its not about "entrusting agency" or anything like that, its that if children are left to sit where they want they will not prioritize the most important thing, their learning - thus they will learn less. children are not little adults, they are idiot children who are incapable of putting their own best interest at heart. seating plans are part of how you get children to learn, one of the most important parts. Important to sit students who struggle next to those who already know what to do, i.e. mix abilities (this is communism), sit students with poor eyesight at front, sit special educational needs where TAs can access them and where you can help them to maximize their learning, sit students prone to distraction in places where this is not going to be as much of an issue, sit children who aggravate each other away from each other, any teacher who just lets children sit where they want, especially in secondary education is a bad teacher who has done serious damage to their charges education through shear laziness

the end result of a good seating plan is better grades, better understanding, better lessons, less disruption, better relationships with the students, u are officially owned

im driving myself crazy by second-guessing my posts here, especially because i know better lol and i assumed it was something i was over at this point. im aware that i can defend myself, i know what im talking about etc, whatever, also im mad that im self-conscious about the jcore stuff especially because ive always been completely unapologetic when it comes to what i like aesthetically, its something im pretty confident about and usually have been in my lifetime. i think the whole thing is probably because well theres still a lot everyone here doesnt know about me yet and honestly im sure a lot of what i try to communicate wouldnt be read correctly anyways. it doesnt matter generally but i also like this place and uhh i pretty much owe the entire trajectory of my political/intellectual development in the last ten years to here and byob (and yes byob!! like i know its the "fyad reject forum" to most goons but the offsite has a separate culture and we hjave some insanely smart posters who could contribute here and would benefit the discussion immensely, some of them do, but most dont) so i care about fitting in to some extent still! but whatever. i go back and forth even in my behavior so its not total at least. i think ive made some confident posts but then i question it etc. i also abolutely still have a hard time with people reading my jokes wrong especially in that area becuase usually they get really inaccurate ideas about what im trying to say. so you know what, fuck it, the music thread posts were you know, mostly about roasting myself for caring even to this extent, or even giving into the impulse to like uhhh, more like argue for the other things i like as being good. like yeah i like jcore or whatver but it comes from a place where i like a lot of other stuff too and im selective and i have my own taste! but very much less about actually feeling bad. i wish i was confident enough to let people misunderstand me though.

it is important to mix people and promote collaborative working between genders - this should not be used as a punishment as it implies that sitting next to people of other genders is a punishment, very bad practice

this is all very thoughtful and reasonable and i'm sure you're putting more care and intelligence into teaching these children than my classmates & i received. still, i will continue chuckling at the Dilemma Of How To Sit Down Good, because its a funny situation

#8631
turns out i have permanent brain damage from ill-fated chair feng shui
#8632
you will be amazed how many students you get in 1st year of secondary school who manage to fall of their chair, again proving the importance of how to sit good and learn to do other things good too

currently re-examining personal relationship w food + the supply chains that get it here
most recent actually communist thing i read was a section of mao's conversations w his niece in 1970; was refreshing and made me much less self conscious ab the current literary-historical kick i'm on
should probably watch 'how yukong moved the mountains' on that note, at least chunk-by-chunk

i haven't been able to sit down and try to Read A Film for *months*. it's all/mostly? been kiddo's cartoons. i guess i did watch porco rosso for the first time *ever* recently but w the disney dub, not subtitles. tried to historicise it as much as i could for the kiddos (inter-war period; what even is fascism) but also didn't wanna overwhelm them/interrupt it too much. would be curious if there was any communist analysis of it, actually. thought the whole scene w all the women building porco's new plane and then sitting down for a meal all together was beautiful.

Yea, and many of my early teachers would do this, I recall. So it must be being taught as a disciplinary strategy or something.

never to justify or explain your seating plan to the class, especially not in a negative way

"I am not sure I can handle it." We often hear this remark when a comrade hesitates to accept an assignment. Why is he unsure of himself? Because he has no systematic understanding of the content and circumstances of the assignment, or because he has had little or no contact with such work, and so the laws governing it are beyond him. After a detailed analysis of the nature and circumstances of the assignment, he will feel more sure of himself and do it willingly. If he spends some time at the job and gains experience and if he is a person who is willing to look into matters with an open mind and not one who approaches problems subjectively, one-sidedly and superficially, then he can draw conclusions for himself as to how to go about the job and do it with much more courage. Only those who are subjective, one-sided and superficial in their approach to problems will smugly issue orders or directives the moment they arrive on the scene, without considering the circumstances, without viewing things in their totality (their history and their present state as a whole) and without getting to the essence of things (their nature and the internal relations between one thing and another). Such people are bound to trip and fall.

Thus it can be seen that the first step in the process of cognition is contact with the objects of the external world; this belongs to the stage of perception. The second step is to synthesize the data of perception by arranging and reconstructing them; this belongs to the stage of conception, judgement and inference. It is only when the data of perception are very rich (not fragmentary) and correspond to reality (are not illusory) that they can be the basis for forming correct concepts and theories.
