i watched "the endless", it was ok, i quite enjoyed it; 2018 had some horror films but i havent really been keeping up, i liked hereditary and i think everyone else did as well, also i watched annihilation and some other less than memorable films, did any good horror films come out in 2018?

i went and saw the brad pitt spaceman movie with the parents. it was okay but i don't need to see it a second time. think it had the same problem as blade runner (1982) where the moviemakers didn't think the audience would get the obvious bummed-out subtext so they have the actor announce it via internal monologue. brad pitt swimming in a dark tunnel / monologue: "i was going into a deeper, darker hole..."

i liked how they presented the political economy of a near-future colonization of the moon and mars in brutal terms; it's still in first-wave colonization mode with private gangsters working on behalf of resource extraction firms shooting each other over turf. also there's applebee's.

wish the movie was more about that than the spaceman's daddy issues. i can't escape my impression that these movies exist as personal vehicles for powerful, older A-list actor-producers -- space movies especially because there are many opportunities for close-ups of the actor's face in isolation inside their spacesuit... floating in space... acting

everyone’s watching Exorcist 3 now and saying it’s good as I watch contentedly from a throne and eat a giant turkey leg

i'm getting into like a flowing river. it follows a few entrepreneurial forerunners to illustrate the changes in production policies from right after mao's death through reform and opening up. 14 episodes in it's really quite good

i'm watching a shitload of Terrace House, the season before the ones on netflix that you have to torrent fansubs of. it's cute enough but one woman on there had a baseball cap that looked like a third reich bird logo and i was like "ok weird choice but surely the symbol on it is differe--" and then they cut to a close up and hoo boy it's a full on swastika inside that bird logo
#1971
thats sailor moon
#1972
there are NO swastikas in sailor moon!

The show seemed to imply that black people got land reparations and their own fascist heroes but actually the fascist heroes are correct about who they extrajudicially torture because the pupil-dilation test showed that they loved swastikas. It goes against pretty much every theme in the comic right away. For anyone who didn't watch, the second scene of this dumbass show is a black cop trying to haphazardly get his gun "buzzed" out of his holster because they need authorization to HQ every time like it's some Republican's nightmare, then getting merc'd by a white supremacist who throws cabbage on his body.
#1975
not watching it and don't know anything about it but reminds me of apocalypse now where it's presented as "anti-war" but the audience turned out to be people who actually like watching helicopters slaughter villagers to wagner, based as it was on conrad with vietnam / africa as the antithesis of civilization and full of savages and you better be careful because you might turn into a savage yourself!!

#1976
i think the marines in that scene like apocalypse now because it’s cool.

midsommar was a ultra kitsch trash tradcath propaganda flick for gbs nerds i cant believe people thjought it was some kind of intelligent commentary on volkisch fascism or something. saw relatively intellligent people gushing over it and it's just a big piece of shit with ehavy handed liberal individualist commentary also really ableist etc trash that didn't handle anyting well. ari aster loves the pope and mussolini and is afraid of drugs and 5th century caricatures

e: terribly acted and written too of course doesn't help

its obvious that the twist is that the people leading the cops and the white supremacists are the same and the cops just serve as a false security for the black population and they're probably going to play that rage against the machine song during the big reveal

i met some such folks once and they were kind, polite, friendly, makes me sort of sad to think of them being burned to death out of avarice, but that just proves that human empathy is bourgeois ideology or something. you murder millions by biting into a dairy milk and murder yourself by walking by a Lexus and not keying it

Starting end of November I will work on an effortpost to meticulously go through the film, point out what is has been left out, contextualise/correct facts it does include and present a more accurate analysis. I'm not an expert so will be learning as I go. It will be far easier, more interesting/fun, and the results of much better quality if some of you want to hop on to a collaborate document and contribute also. It's already online with the film transcript, so PM me for the link.

theres a new season of Flavorful Origins, subbed food documentary produced in China on netflix. its really nice to have a laid back cooking show that is actually about ingredients, people, and culture. and instead of slavering over some fuckoff celebrity chef, its all about the labour that goes into food, can you fucking imagine!!!

cooking shows made by americans are shrill unwatchable garbage, everything has to be constantly exploding race against the clock action and gloating misery porn. 15 seconds is enough to make me want to murder the entire production team.

im a sophisticated intellectual so when i want a change of pace from cooking shows i mix it up a bit with highbrow stuff like Kitten Rescue

I watched The Creature from the Black Lagoon again. The premise is they find a fossil that suggests that intelligent life developed on Earth in the Devonian when animals first started colonizing dry land, and humans didn't realize it earlier because of what a small portion of the history of life gets retained in the fossil record. It reminds me of that Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union book I like that Carl Sagan got translated into English with his commentary set apart by little triangle brackets. I.S. Shklovksy and Sagan crunch numbers and agree that from their POV any planet with intelligent life in the current era of the universe, including Earth, has a good chance of having developed intelligent life one or more times in the past. I'm not sure it would crave our bustiest beach-blanket babes but I won't reject that out of hand either.
#1999
To be fair to my opponents the babe is a scientist but the Creature dies before anyone can ask him if her brain is a big part of why he finds her attractive even though she is not part fish. He bumps her head on stuff when he's carrying her into his lair but that's because the guy in the costume couldn't see anything while wearing it or even sit down. They had to spray him with a hose every now and then so he wouldn't die. Hell,
