E: it's also notable that this is how we interact with all media today, wrestling was the model for the "cinematic universes" which are entirely self-referential and rise or fall based on their affective resonance with the "fans." supermechagodzilla has years of fucking with people over on SA about this, I defer to him about cinema.

You shouldn’t because he’s absolutely wrong, the “shared universe” of Disney superhero movies comes directly from the successful marketing gimmick of the comic book company they bought, a gimmick that dates to the early 1940s.

Since he has to know that I think you can assume he’s trolling, which I respect at least as much if not more than being right about that topic.

The sound of metal chains whipping against bare flesh hang heavy in the air, like a bird flying into a headwind. The room is damp and sparsely lit. SUPERMECHAGODZILLA’s scarred jowls are illuminated by a desk lamp laying sideways on the floor

Which reading is true? Which reading is true? WHICH READING IS TRUE!?

KOOS
The words are used specifically for their literal intention, the events are straightforward so as to be easily understood by an audience of children.

The beating begins again, with a furious vigour, until SUPERMECHAGODZILLA can barely stand. He rests one hand against a dirty wall, sweat marring his 1993 Nebraska Film Festival hypercolor t-shirt.

SUPERMECHAGODZILA
The opposite reading is true… The opposite reading is true. I’ve been to college.

KOOS straightens his posture, his pride and dignity unscathed by the days long assault of a fat, stupid man.

KOOS
Any perceived allusions to facism in A Goofy Movie are a wholesale invention of a misguided viewer.

SUPERMECHAGODZILLA adopts the look of a man who has been defeated. Wearily, he grabs a shotgun that had been resting in the corner, and cocks it loudly.

KOOS
Goofy simply wishes to bond with his son through fishing, a traditional pastime, as he had done with his own father. It is neither parable nor allegory. Neither dog was molested, the material does not support this.

I've been saying the Democrats should've run Hillary like this because she's into New Age stuff and UFOs. Promise full disclosure of alien visitation and crank up the Enya during the convention. I didn't watch the debates.

Her floatiness is hard for me to dislike though if I imagine myself being jolted awake at night only to find myself behind a podium with Rachel Maddow staring at me under hot stage lights. What would you do? "Mr. Trak, what is your policy on the Sino-Russian threat?" Well, the best I could probably do is stammer for a minute about how no one in the room can hurt me, Republicans employ ex-Arrow Cross henchmen and that we need to come to a reasonable bargain with China and Russia to establish a globally harmonious command economy.

I think a lot of kids and young-at-heart just want something to replace clowns, people with a clown-like quality where the thoroughness of the performance suggests a certain underlying weird earnestness, so they get excited irony-style over someone who's exactly like at least 2-3 people that everyone has known in their lives and is just as mundane and boring. I don't think it's bad but I can't get into it, probably my loss. It's the fully online "left" version of breathless Facebook posts about how Buttigieg is a booj man from the Midwest with a HUSBAND and he's on the NEWS, it's like, okay, all right, I know you've met a Gay before.

I think it's reasonable to expect a higher level of self-destruction from yourself, something like, "it's very good"

In that case I'm worried the papers would remark the next day on an "alarming" and "menacing" turn as the candidate began resorting to phrases such as "you know who you are" and "get your damn hands off me." I can't recall who I was referring to by the first statement, but I admit I have a lot to learn about people, and people who need people, and as Barbra Streisand said those are the luckiest people of all.

it did at least frame Beria as the real villain

I'm interested in people's reactions to the movie because I think it shows things, whether on purpose or not, that run against the official stereotypes. People are getting blasted left and right which is what you'd expect, but then Stalin dies and the masses spontaneously pour into the capital, and they're marching in on foot in organized units with red flags and demanding that Beria's troops let them pass because they are "here to see Comrade Stalin!" The movie doesn't explain any of this or why that would happen, but I think it might throw audiences for a loop because most Americans if they have thought about that period at all just think of it as "crazy" or people getting bossed around by Makarov-waving lunatics like Nineteen Eighty-Four which is what they read in high school.

Anyways I took my dad to see it and he "liked Khrushchev." He is presented as a dweeby guy who gets pushed around a lot but uses his smarts and concealed ruthlessness to become the top dog. Dad also likes Pete Buttigieg so uh

Well, I dunno. But because I am eating from the trash can all the time it reminds me of Zizek's line in his pervert movies about how the way to attack Marxism-Leninism is not to attack the leaders but to attack the concept of the masses. If you attack the leaders as just dopes or whatever like in Death of Stalin you get boomers like my dad (who remembers Khrushchev) rooting for Khrushchev to take Beria to the cleaners because Beria is a real asshole and deserves it.

If I was trying to attack Stalin, the last thing I would do is show masses of people supporting him or mourning his death and showing them doing that on their own and in a way that's at odds with the bureaucracy! This also relates to how images of ordinary Koreans in the DPRK going about their day is presented in this typical way: "well, they're all actors." Even when I didn't consider myself a socialist that just seemed absurd and never made much sense to me but people will absolutely swear that it's all a big Truman Show, but I think that's why people need to believe that, and if there are masses milling about someone else has to be lurking off screen with a cocked pistol. Ideally you don't show any ordinary people at all and boil it down to the Politburo as scenery-chewing Bond villains in rotating chairs, but if you do that you get the boomers' kids building internet personas off this kitsch with usernames like Rotating Soviet Chair Poster:

I'm thinking the CPUSA needs to get on this while the getting is good because I ran into one of their tables recently and they tried to sell me on the party. They deduced I knew a few things so they dropped the usual pitch to tell me the party had recently purged some right-deviationists which improved my impression of them. "Join now: Recently purged!"
