on topic, union pacific recently refurbished one of their 'big boy' steam locomotives. they had to make most of the parts by hand since they aren't floating around any more.



there's also this cool old stock film about the engine

my dad worked at union pacific for 40 years as a signalman and he probably would have loved to work on this. it's pretty interesting how retired railroad workers get into train models or something on the side.

I'll use it to segue into something else because I honestly haven't watched more than one episode, but my brother explained that these kids of Goldman Sachs executives landed screenwriter gigs and copied the books until they ran out of books. Problem was the show became wildly popular during that time and HBO was practically dumping truckloads of cash in the studio parking lot to keep the show going, so they came back for one more season but have otherwise checked out, so it's not so good now. They've already made their money and can now leave to write another Star Wars trilogy.

But whatever. I'm more forgiving of these things with sci-fi and fantasy. It's a sword and dragon show. Like there might be plot holes and weird inconsistencies in Xena: Warrior Princess but the concept is so absurd to begin with it's unreasonable to get worked up about how the heroes should've *really* fought the ice wizards at the battle for frosty mountain. If you just sit back and enjoy Xena doing cartwheels you'll be pleasantly surprised when she kicks open the door to philosophical or spiritual topics. It's about being humble.

I've been watching these Denis Villeneuve movies lately. I liked Prisoners but there were parts that felt a bit contrived, and while you could say the same thing about BR2049, I didn't mind it in the latter. He's directing Dune next and I'm looking forward to it. I predict there will be pretentious humbug about the movie from the orthodox Dune fanatics, but all Frank Herbert was really doing was flipping around some of Isaac Asimov's assumptions in the Foundation trilogy. It's not a big deal.
