the evil dictator maduro sabotages democracy by banning the guy who refused to show up to elections from participating in the elections that we are telling you are totally fraudulent so there would be no point in turning up. a dastardly move indeed. when will the sinister machinations end.

feels like a bizarre mirror world to see real discussion hashing out the finer points of historical materialism in the comments of rcg's 2013 documentary in the midst of all the "YOUR GOD FAILED" "COMMUNISTS ARE GENOCIDAL, TIME FOR COMMIE GENOCIDE" "YOU DON'T KNOW THE NIGHTMARE TIL YOU COME LIVE HERE" astroturfing/spiteful real life fascists

although the person being engaged could well be a sockpuppet because candid schmyles sounds like something one of you made up, here's candid schmyles
"By your own definition now that Chavez is gone he is an invisible god. And socialism/communism has historically had its little red bibles and its huge statues of the glorious leader. Both the dogma and the icons of political religion. If you do not grasp that then I feel sorry for you. You are "breaking" nothing to me and you have no right to tell me not to "DARE" anything. Then you descend into a lecture on what I should or should not criticise. My comments were balanced and fair and overall I praised the film. I am aware that any film has its limitations but failing to address the real problems facing Venezuela leaves the film open to being viewed as purely an apologetic. Such films preach only to the congregation. If the film had explored the real problems more it would not be open to the only criticisms I had. And that really is a question of integrity of the films mission. As stated I have enormous respect for what the social movement is achieving against all odds in Venezuela and I wish the nation and its peoples every success in building a beacon of hope in the midst of our darkly corrupt capitalist world."
like the state dept. has an angle for almost everybody, yeah? not just the obvious marks but also ostensible 'anticapitalists'?

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/apr/02/latin-americans-fear-precedent-set-by-legal-justification-for-syria-intervention

States involved in the counter-Isis campaign and other foreign military operations have submitted letters of justification for their actions to the UN, citing self-defence against the threat of terrorism and arguing in many cases that the governments of the countries involved have been “unwilling or unable” to deal with the threat. The letters have typically been submitted after the military operations have taken place.

human rights, infant mortality, terrorism...they're throwing everything into the pot now aren't they. but it still manages to feel very half assed.

also, and i can't find the link, but somewhere in the syria thread there is an article detailing several instances where the USAF "accidentally" bombed SAA positions when they were on the verge of defeating ISIS and nusra units during engagements.

i don't think this is going to work out the way he hopes lol

apparently guaido's babby troops released leopoldo lopez, who the guardian says has been behind guaido's sudden ascent all along (big surprise). a refresher:

cars posted:

Leopoldo Lopez and Maria Corina Machado, two of the leaders behind the violent protests, have long histories as collaborators, grantees and agents of Washington. The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) have channeled multi-million dollar funding to Lopez’s political parties Primero Justicia and Voluntad Popular, and Machado’s NGO Sumate and her electoral campaigns. These Washington agencies have also filtered more than $14 million to opposition groups in Venezuela between 2013 and 2014 including funding for their political campaigns in 2013 and for the anti-government protests in 2014. This continues the pattern of financing from the US government to anti-Chavez groups in Venezuela since 2001, when millions of dollars were given to organizations from so-called “civil society” to execute a coup d’état against President Chavez in April 2002. After their failure days later, USAID opened an Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) in Caracas to, together with the NED, inject more than $100 million in efforts to undermine the Chavez government and reinforce the opposition during the following eight years.

At the beginning of 2011, after being publicly exposed for its grave violations of Venezuelan law and sovereignty, the OTI closed its doors in Venezuela and USAID operations were transferred to its offices in the US. The flow of money to anti-government groups didn’t stop, despite the enactment by Venezuela’s National Assembly of the Law of Political Sovereignty and National Self-Determination at the end of 2010, which outright prohibits foreign funding of political groups in the country. US agencies and the Venezuelan groups that receive their money continue to violate the law with impunity. In the Obama Administration’s Foreign Operations Budgets, between $5-6 million have been included to fund opposition groups in Venezuela through USAID since 2012.

The defectors were unarmed and chose not to wear uniforms “out of respect to Colombia” which is hosting them, one national guardsman said, asking not to be named due to the febrile nature of the situation. “We are awaiting orders from our president Juan Guaidó,” he said.

However, with little clear command structure on the border, and the location of the gathering changed from the nearby Tienditas bridge complex at the last minute, the group had largely dissipated hours later.

- Recover the operational capacity and significantly increase production of the oil industry, review legal frameworks and agreements harmful to it and appoint a new PDVSA board, that is honest and capable, to ensure its efficient operation in service of the country;

- Insert Venezuela once again into international financial circuits and acquire from these the financial support needed to overcome short-term difficulties;

- Decelerate the current inflationary process, assuming an exchange rate policy that will promote domestic production and, in general, correct macroeconomic imbalances caused by years of excesses and corruption; restore the autonomy of the BCV ; enforce an efficient and transparent system for the coordination of public finances and appoint new authorities of economic entities of the State, based on norms and criteria of capability and merit;

- Make arrangements for fair compensation for damage that might arise from arbitrary expropriation; review the current status of all non-oil companies that ended up in state hands by the voracity of the regime and decide the forms of ownership and management that they should take to ensure their productive recovery.

- Remove the tangle of controls that stifle the economy and rebuild the legal and economic bases that are necessary to attract productive investment to ensure stable growth in the future.
