a co-worker of mine was complimenting another on their hard work and then other people started chiming in with stuff like "yeah, i agree" and "you`re doing a great job" and then i said "and my axe". everyone had a really confused look on their face so i just silently turned around and promised myself never to quote lotr again

went to see ali abunimah and eitan bronstein speak at the catholic university of nijmegen. deeply inspiring people, the both of them, once the powerpoint slides were unfucked. what struck me particularly was how under control they were when recounting the nature of israeli atrocities, the nakba etc, all of which they have an encyclopedic knowledge of. i'd no idea about anti-zionist israelis before today, so i'm really happy that's a thing

there was a zionist heckler who ranted one long unbroken sentence switching from topic to topic so that neither had a chance to interrupt (it was really quite enraging) and they effortlessly dismantled it calmly and in fine detail. she'd been angrily making notes the whole time and ran out the door as soon as the event was over

BDS was explained and stressed, beyond that one asshole lady the audience was extremely receptive. there was a lot of apparently very important people there, but i dunno who any of them were because im not dutch

The Eno river is more than twice its avg height over the past 60 years. Neat and odd hurricane thing I learned yesterday: when you have mountains near a coast, the water dumped onto an area moves up from lowlands to mountains, meaning
later it comes back down, often overruning things like lakes swollen with new rain. Every school in NC seems closed and the Gov declared a state of emergency. We're not even the ones taking it to the face, so I can only wonder how others are faring.

I had friends in Boone in 2004, next to no one in the States thinks about a hurricane in the mountains

while reading an article the other day i discovered a blind spot in the center of one eye. with both eyes open, i wouldn't even notice; with the other one closed, i can no longer read. visual field test confirms it, but the ophthalmologist says no irregularities with the retina etc, so it's probably neurological. earliest i could book a specialist to hopefully tell me more is around the end of the year

kinda troubling, but by now i've either exhausted or bored myself fretting about it, so i'm feeling pretty chill overall

here's what i was reading, anyway. pretty interesting

you ever try eyedrops? not the red-out kind, but just moisteners (often sold as packages of single-use containers because if you use them all the time you don't want to deal with all the preservatives in the regular bottles)? I get that shit sometimes because I got one eye with really shit tearducts and so I can dry out if I don't do it manually

Hope the doctor's visit goes well, if i makes you feel any better if you have the thing I had it'll suck ass but it won't really be life-threatening and the delay in getting a diagnosis won't be an issue

best of luck. not all ophthalmologists have the equipment or specific knowledge to diagnose certain retinal/related problems but if they can't see any issues with the slit lamp setup, i wouldnt be super worried about having to wait a couple months to see the specialist. chances are whatever's going on w your central vision has been present for a while but you just haven't happened to notice until now. to stay safe anyway, try not to bump your head really hard and don't stare at the sun

did they give you an amsler grid to peep @? if not you there are plenty online you can print out & tape to your fridge or whatever so you can determine if your vision is rapidly changing. if so call up the specialist n see if they can get you in earlier

if they run a fluorescein angiography be warned that your piss will be highlighter yellow for most of the day afterwards. this is probably the most fun thing that can occur at a retinal surgeon's office unfortunately

for example in a couple months i get to go back in to see if im gon need to get more injections shot right into my eyeball

i've had a continuous dull ache (like a cramp) in the lower left side of my abdomen for about a month and i'm just getting to this point. haven't gone to the doc because i don't have healthcare currently, but i do have a job lined up in a few weeks and the insurance kicks in immediately. hopefully i haven't drank myself to death.

Michael seriously fucked a large number of places. Theres a video floating on ciabook from a helicopter flyover at Mexico Beach in Florida that shows entirely leveled blocks. The local movement is figuring out who has distribution networks further south in more damaged areas. Durham is still supporting Florence relief in east NC so we're looking into what resources we may be able to redirect. If you have any contact with orgs in heavily effected towns, please PM me.

All that happened to me was a limb fell on my roof and I have to go rent a ladder and chainsaw now. Hopefully no roof damage.

pretty sure he got that from bill hicks. can't remember which show though. either the one where he mocks victims of domestic violence, or the one where he describes statutory rape in graphic detail. a true genius, taken from us too young. rip in peace.

I went to a Republican Socialist meeting, which was a good reminder that the "Socialist" part of the equation always tends to be pretty suspect. Some good stories from ex Volunteers though
