how people saying socialism actually want communism (lol);

mccarthyist hysteria never died and a lot of people sincerely believe that anyone left of Reagan is either a secret communist or a dupe of secret communists. cold war ideology runs really deep. i've been thinking about that a lot lately in conversations with My Dad, who means well but got a humanities degree in the 70s from one of canada's biggest centers of Sovietology, a completely insane field full of cranks and spooks. while he intellectually understands that a lot of the people who wrote his textbooks have since been refuted as coocoo bananas and swept into the dustbin of history, the stain on his heart remains.

"i know they didnt teach me X the right way but i dont want to have to learn another way, ive obviously been getting by with this knowledge so far" seems to be common belief. that being said i dont want to learn math another way.

i forgot that i had aranged a plumber to come in today and obviously i panicked and hid the large bust of joseph stalin i whimfully purchased in the first place i could think of, inside the fridge. shameful

i understand it's not cool to post about the weather but i've been to some pretty hot places and london is so fucking hot today jesus christ. and none of the buildings are made for extreme heat (or cold), a/c is mostly not a thing here. this is insane, we broke the climate.

i was taking a lyft to an important meeting today, and the entire fucking time i had to pretend that i have no idea who jordan peterson or joe rogan are, and that i do not have any strong opinions about politics or society in general. yelling at cabbies and showing statues to plumbers are irrelevant, don't sweat it.

#7206
i find most people can have a civil conversation actually even if you don't agree that jordan peterson solved all problems forever. people are not like twitter users, who are not people

i find it helps to keep in mind that you could be wrong about something/everything and everyone's just fuckin trying to get through the day/life/world/bullshit as much as you are. maybe this is easier for me because i have absolutely no claim or belief that i am a scholar or that i know how marxism works or any of that.
#7210
i just tell people what i believe. i don't really get the point of hiding it. it's not like i have some corporate job to lose. cheerful persistence a la newt gingrich is how i talk about it.

my mini-thesis is due tomorrow and i am pretty done with academia forever. it would be cheap to blame academia for this since the reality is i just don't like the culture for my own reasons. everyone has been nice and accommodating to the extent that they could be expected to be. i enjoyed the teaching part and got good feedback all things considered. i will use the skills/knowledge i learned. it helped my financial situation a fair bit as a low-income person and allowed me to travel more. but i think i'm just going to do skill-building types of workshops and such in the future and avoid theory/history courses. i enjoy learning but yeah. there is a lot of strange ego and politics involved which seems like a waste of time to me.

Good luck regardless & congratulations.

prove it. put a bomb in the box and send it to Jacobin.

#7227
if the box is full of actual leftist writings then you don't even need the bomb, they'll still be just as devastated.

I hereby claim as many books as possible

My grandma got a sample ballot in the mail for the first time since becoming a US citizen and asked me if I knew anything about the candidates. I told her I didn't know much but I would take a look, and it turns out she had registered as a Republican. Then she told me that she already knew who she would vote for governor because he's a nice man that will keep the illegal immigrants out of the country. None of that was really surprising, I already knew she was racist, but hilariously, after me trying to argue about indigenous land rights, the empire excluding subjects from its core, and the parasitism of American life on Mexican labor in very broken Russian, she brought up District 9, the movie.

She thought the point of District 9 was that illegal immigration is bad.
#7239
Let me talk to her.

I can't believe your grandma watched District 9
