The 25 or so people that were killed were local Arab tribesmen who may have been attacking loose isis cells who are roaming around US occupied territory.

Its not clear yet if they had any contact with SDF, if it was a pre planned US ambush or spontaneous assault... Locals probably did so not on SAA orders.

The US military and its SDF quislings are boasting about the brutality they unleashed on these local people who they are bringing "democratic confederacy" to - c130s, a10s, helicopter gunships etc

The sadistic US strategy is to block aid and reconstruction from getting to ~18 million Syrians in the republic.
https://amp.businessinsider.com/us-syria-assad-remove-north-korea-2018-2
The SDF/US occupies most of Syria's oil, fresh water and arable land, keeping this will help prevent recovery.

One of the US self justifications for being there is to press for 'free and fair elections', which would probably embarrass them and their SDF/FSA confederates if they take place.
But today the US rejected Venezuelan elections before they take place, and their think tankers are already urging them to reject any elections in Syria

assad didnt do the attacks. no evidence!

http://www.newsweek.com/now-mattis-admits-there-was-no-evidence-assad-using-poison-gas-his-people-801542 posted:

Lost in the hyper-politicized hullabaloo surrounding the Nunes Memorandum and the Steele Dossier was the striking statement by Secretary of Defense James Mattis that the U.S. has “no evidence” that the Syrian government used the banned nerve agent Sarin against its own people.

This assertion flies in the face of the White House (NSC) Memorandum which was rapidly produced and declassified to justify an American Tomahawk missile strike against the Shayrat airbase in Syria.

Mattis offered no temporal qualifications, which means that both the 2017 event in Khan Sheikhoun and the 2013 tragedy in Ghouta are unsolved cases in the eyes of the Defense Department and Defense Intelligence Agency.

Mattis went on to acknowledge that “aid groups and others” had provided evidence and reports but stopped short of naming President Assad as the culprit.

There were casualties from organophosphate poisoning in both cases; that much is certain. But America has accused Assad of direct responsibility for Sarin attacks and even blamed Russia for culpability in the Khan Sheikhoun tragedy.

Now its own military boss has said on the record that we have no evidence to support this conclusion. In so doing, Mattis tacitly impugned the interventionists who were responsible for pushing the “Assad is guilty” narrative twice without sufficient supporting evidence, at least in the eyes of the Pentagon.

Serious, experienced chemical weapons experts and investigators such as Hans Blix, Scott Ritter, Gareth Porter and Theodore Postol have all cast doubt on “official” American narratives regarding President Assad employing Sarin.

These analysts have all focused on the technical aspects of the two attacks and found them not to be consistent with the use of nation-state quality Sarin munitions.

The 2013 Ghouta event, for example, employed home-made rockets of the type favored by insurgents. The White House Memorandum on Khan Sheikhoun seemed to rely heavily on testimony from the Syrian White Helmets who were filmed at the scene having contact with supposed Sarin-tainted casualties and not suffering any ill effects.

Likewise, these same actors were filmed wearing chemical weapons training suits around the supposed “point of impact” in Khan Sheikhoun, something which makes their testimony (and samples) highly suspect. A training suit offers no protection at all, and these people would all be dead if they had come into contact with real military-grade Sarin.

Chemical weapons are abhorrent and illegal, and no one knows this more than Carla Del Ponte. She, however, was unable to fulfill her U.N. Joint Investigative Mechanism mandate in Syria and withdrew in protest over the United States refusing to fully investigate allegations of chemical weapons use by “rebels” (jihadis) allied with the American effort to oust President Assad (including the use of Sarin by anti-Assad rebels).

U.S. Strikes Killed Scores of Russia Fighters in Syria, Sources Say
-American, rebel forces repel attack by mercenaries in the east
-The 200-plus deaths dwarf official Russian toll in the war

i guess russia is disavowing the victims

The Russian assault may have been a rogue operation, underscoring the complexity of a conflict that started as a domestic crackdown only to morph into a proxy war involving Islamic extremists, stateless Kurds and regional powers Iran, Turkey and now Israel. Russia’s military said it had nothing to do with the attack and the U.S. accepted the claim. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis called the whole thing “perplexing,” but provided no further details.

...
“No one wants to start a world war over a volunteer or a mercenary who wasn’t sent by the state and was hit by Americans,” Vitaly Naumkin, a senior adviser to Russia’s government on Syria, said in an interview.

Speculation that the massacre of Syrian and Russian soldiers by the US in the East and the bombing of military bases with Russian soldiers by Israel in the West was a coordinated ambush ahead of Russia's election next month.

Most YPG militias have gone North to fight the Turks, ISIS are free to roam the sdf/US territory, it seems that it is ex-ISIS FSA working with the USA against the Syria army.
Theb pre-planned massacre also took place within Syrian side of the 'zones' that Russia and the US worked out a few months ago.

Claims that Syria will be enforcing new rules against Israeli attacks?

Saw that same news. my understanding of the whole thing is that turkey wanted to go at the kurds but couldnt go in east of the euphrates where they are supported by americans, so they pushed into afrin instead.

the syrian state was offering some pretty strict terms to come in and protect the kurds, terms that most likely are acceptable to turkey as well. in which case it's a win for everyone except separatist kurds.

these are the terms that were rumored to be offered the other day:

Im pretty sure the Americans prefer Syrian forces holding Afrin over Turkish forces, any D.C-envision puppet Syria will have to be free of Turkish control, particularly AKP control. A Syria divided with the Turks is a Syria less capable of counter-revolutionary containment.

Turkey apparently vetoed this because Syria's agreement didn't dismantle the YPG enough.

Oh lol https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/27/world/asia/north-korea-syria-chemical-weapons-sanctions.html

North Korea has been shipping supplies to the Syrian government that could be used in the production of chemical weapons, United Nations experts contend.

The evidence of a North Korean connection comes as the United States and other countries have accused the Syrian government of using chemical weapons on civilians, including recent attacks on civilians in the Damascus suburb of eastern Ghouta using what appears to have been chlorine gas.

The supplies from North Korea include acid-resistant tiles, valves and thermometers, according to a report by United Nations investigators. North Korean missile technicians have also been spotted working at known chemical weapons and missile facilities inside Syria, according to the report, which was written by a panel of experts who looked at North Korea’s compliance with United Nations sanctions.

Neither the report’s authors nor members of the United Nations Security Council who have seen it would comment, and neither would the United States’ mission to the international agency.

It is unclear when, or even whether, the report will be released.

The eight experts who make up the panel all come from different countries and possess specific expertise in areas like weapons of mass destruction, maritime transport and customs controls. Since 2010 the panel has had a mandate from the Security Council to investigate possible sanctions violations by North Korea and present its findings in an annual report.

Though experts who viewed the report said the evidence it cited did not prove definitively that there was current, continuing collaboration between North Korea and Syria on chemical weapons, they said it did provide the most detailed account to date of efforts to circumvent sanctions intended to curtail the military advancement of both countries.

William Newcomb, who was a member of the United Nations panel of experts on North Korea from 2011 to 2014, called the report “an important breakthrough.”

Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, there have been suspicions that North Korea was providing equipment and expertise to maintain the chemical weapons program of Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad. Those suspicions were not assuaged when in 2013 Syria signed onto the Chemical Weapons Convention and claimed to give up its chemical weapons stocks.

“We knew stuff was going on,” Mr. Newcomb said. “We really wanted to up the game on chemical weapons programs, and we just weren’t able to get what we needed to do so.”

The report, which is more than 200 pages long, includes copies of contracts between North Korean and Syrian companies as well as bills of lading indicating the types of materials shipped. Much information was provided by unidentified United Nations member states.

because we have never seen such documents faked as a pretext for war before

oh and the newcomb guy they quote is a totally independent expert

President Trump has told advisers that he wants to withdraw U.S. forces from Syria once remaining pockets of ISIS militants are defeated.

Reuters reported Friday that the president has spoken in internal deliberations with advisers about an early exit from Syria, though no such plan is complete and he has not given specific orders to do so.

One official told Reuters that Trump has said that "once ISIS and its remnants are destroyed that the United States would be looking toward having countries in the region playing a larger role in ensuring security and leaving it at that."

thats definitely not happening, BUT i choose to believe Trump saw a bvunch of Assad curse memes in his twitter mentions and is adjustnig his policy accordingly.
