this is actually true and im really arguing for utopistic effectiveness of future computing (especially if dictated and embraced by a socialist state) rather than as an ethical neccesity for consumers to switch asap. gnu/linux is a hobbyist thing for me but i think for the sake of security (comrades understanding the difference between security through obscurity of a software that has been certified by a handful of commercial network security corporations vs. the track record of foss software actually going through the motions to make sure atleast the most blatant offenses regarding internet security can be audited and fixed asap) considering how there is actually the need to plan quasilegal actions (ie. counterdemo to stop a legal fascist march) without leaving a recognizable digital footprint for the LE to follow and identify. knowing your way around cryptography, unsecured hotspots/vpn connections etc. is easier to handle with foss if not for the sake of the transparent software then for the fact that generating a liveusb takes like 5min and you can guarantee yourself anonymity considering all your actions being compressed, read, written and finally destroyed in RAM.

i had debian for a little bit, which i liked for Aesthetic reasons also because the file system/command line stuff is more sane. i think if i try a non-windows os again it'll be mac osx or whatever theyre up to now.

i have an old macbook for a daily driver, hardware just keeps going (assuming you're happy to swap out the battery every 5-6 years) and the cli is great. best of both worlds imo. i mean it would be shit for gaming but thats ok because video games are for children.

i've stuck to winamp while my audiophile friends shifted to foobar. this WASAPI thing seemed interesting so i went looking for a winamp plugin. found something called YASAPI. here's the coder's dedication on his sourceforge page

i use arch on a thinkpad t420 and t60. i managed to convince myself that systemd was shit and was prepared to jump on the openbsd train but i have a 4tb external drive that is formatted ext4 and openbsd can't do it and i need to access my large anime collection
i'm compromising and gonna for real install gentoo, like the meme.

it really depends what you want to do with your computer and how much control you want/need to have over your applications and data. the average person can probably get away with having absolutely everything web based these days

afaik it's dead, the most interesting alternative is sailfish which is a continuation of what nokia was developing before microsoft bought them out and started churning out shitty windows phones nobody wanted. sailfish isn't open source if that matters to you, but frankly no smartphone os ever fully will be because they have to work with proprietary radio chips and stuff. so your options are either ios/android or just get a dumbphone if you can live with it
