american exceptionalism doesn't just encompass the plain fact that the US is held to a hypocritical double standard and allowed to do whatever it wants, it is also the attitude of hundreds of millions of people who believe deep down in their hearts that this double standard is good

perhaps, but can't deadken do a pithy article in jacobin pointing out the recent history? I mean ukraine has been a warzone since the us got way too involved in regime change, shouldn't the contrast help some left-liberals (whatever the fuck that is) have less faith in government?

you're assuming that liberals would notice or care. anything bad that happens in Ukraine is and always will be the wily machinations of Putin for liberals.

but look at an another example. the Libyan invasion should be an open and shut case: the country is a mess, Tripoli is in ruins, life is objectively worse for everyone in just about every way.

have you seen any "We Were Wrong About Gaddhafi" apologia in The Atlantic? because i sure haven't. i have, on the other hand, seen many articles talking about how its chief architect was literally the most qualified presidential candidate in history

#688
iirc in that obama puffpiece that jeffrey goldberg did last fall obama obliquely mentioned that libya was his biggest foreign policy mistake in office because it lacked a 'post-gaddafi component' (paraphrased) and this vague and stupid statement--characterized as the honest reflections of a sober and mature(r) statesman--functions as a kind of dog-whistle stopping post for any further liberal inquiry about the matter

this kind of one-sentence--hell, one phrase--condensing of geopolitics into hagiography will, precisely as intended, be taken as gospel if the topic is even cited at all, but what's important is that it entirely shuts out any causal alternative or context for why the invasion of libya happened the way that it did

atlantic articles and those other rags are basically a glossy subliminal ssshhh to the liberal mind

stuff like the past two posts remind me of one of the few times i was in manhattan, i ended up meeting this guy who is a lawyer for the UNHRC and seemed pretty high up, he was telling me about what they were up to in pakistan at like 3am after a trillion drinks so he was really baring his heart and it was just like... totally zero. zero understanding of any kind of wider context, sounded like State just flew them in and pointed them at a couple of people so they could feel good about "helping" one political prisoner or another, and totally ignore any kind of big picture.

in out feel good get paid go home to greenwich village.

i just got this empty feeling in the pit of my stomach like, oh, this is it. this is the most liberal person, with the most liberal perspective on the world, doing the most liberal thing: absolutely nothing.

and he sincerely believed in it, with all of his heart.

(CNN)President Donald Trump wants to pass an immigration reform bill that could grant legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants living in the US, a senior administration official said Tuesday.

The President is eager to pass a compromise immigration bill in his first term that would stop short of granting a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants, but would allow undocumented immigrants who aren't serious or violent criminals to live, work and pay taxes in the US without fear of deportation, the senior official told reporters Tuesday at the White House. And he is now considering adding the topic to his speech Tuesday night before his address to a joint session of Congress.

oh it's just a way to entrench a worker class with no rights
#695
issue a few racist executive orders, frog march hundreds of immigrants out of their homes and even hospitals, etc. now your white supremacist supporters will give you some leeway and the liberals will be desperate to take a compromise should you offer it. The Art of the Deal

#698
This isn't surprising. As I think Urbandale is pointing out, like Reagan, creating a environment of terror for immigrants while carefully making sure they can still get in and stay in the country is good business and not unprecedented. He's basically dependent on the Heritage Foundation for his administration to function, so of course he's going to end up having generic Republican positions on most things. Even the trade stuff is probably just a red herring.I think there are things that are uniquely dangerous about Trump, but that has more to do with his approach to the media and political mobilization than how he runs the government.
#699
i've been saying Trump is just Rude Reagan for a while now. you'd think motherfuckers never seen a tv clown in the oval office or somethin

Today in "tHE r H i z z o n E told you so" https://www.liberationnews.org/socialist-orientation-splits-trump-administration-capitalist-class/

Trump is not trusted by the bourgeoisie to be the top executive to manage their common affairs. He neither has the inclination, training or temperament for the task at hand. In fact, his absolute narcissism, hustling and dictatorial style makes him a destabilizing factor for imperialism and the institutions of the U.S.-dominated world order that they have carefully managed for decades. That’s their main beef with Trump.

the problem i have with this argument is that all the saem people seem to have no objection to the possibility of president joe biden, a man whose extremely evident and irreversible brain damage would seem to pose many more and greater risks than trump's temperament
