So, if you're like most people here, you're putting in overtime every week just trying to stack enough cash to buy a bigger house. But something's bothering you - you see the news, you're worried that Trump and his neo-nazi thugs might seize the White House unless you cast the deciding vote in the most important election of your lifetime. But what else can you do to help? Maybe join a socialist organization, lunkhead!

Here are the options in the ol' "USA":

Democratic Socialists of America
You've heard that Europe has a health care system, and you're thinking it'd be nice if the USA had one, too. And everyone knows that having a doctor is the first step towards socialist revolution. So your plan is to get a bunch of socialists elected who will raise taxes and regulate Wall Street, then something something, then socialism. The DSA has a long history of bold and independent grassroots politics, whether supporting a Senator in the Democratic Party primary, or calling for a vote "Against Trump" in the 2016 election.

Communist Party USA
Most federal agents quit the party once they retired, leaving only a small number of bewildered men with dementia who cling to discredited revisionist claptrap in hopes of electing Hillary Clinton. One of the larger groups in the USA, almost wholly because of its name, as it attracts teenagers who come upon yellowed old literature in a thrift shop pay-what-you-can bin. Join this organization if you want to be expelled soon after for questioning the need for unity of the working class against the ultra-right.

Party of Communists USA
If Lenin were alive (and he might be) he would probably hate this party for having an awkward, silly name. If it helps, their platform is essentially "Stalin - not so bad after all?" which partially redeems things. You can fit most members in a small school gym, were they allowed to be there.

Solidarity US
Excellent organization that unites socialism-from-below with work on the ground in anti-racist, feminist struggles. They've been around for a long time, and if you join you could be one of their first members.

Party for Socialism and Liberation
A lot of people on our forum support this Brezhnevite post-Trotskyite sect because it has a strong internationalist position of picking the global lesser evils. Most policy positions are selected by imagining whatever the nightmare of a wonk might be. Actually seems to attract some "people of color", which are actively shunned by most other groups.

Worker's World Party
Obsolete; see PSL.

International Socialist Organization
Not actually international, we'll give benefit of the doubt on socialism. Your indoctrination here consists of listing countries with revolutions and then repeating back that they were state-capitalist. On most international questions your main activism should be to denounce the horrible dictator for eating the flesh of children, but then mentioning you don't want them bombed, then maybe or maybe not winking at NATO.

Revolutionary Communist Party
Chairman Bob Avakian is not accepting new members at this time, because the more people there are, the less his BAsics can permeate the group, which would dilute his new synthesis.

Small Maoite Groupings
If you find yourself yelling at people at the grocery store a lot, or leaving no tip at a restaurant because of bad service, think about joining a contemporary Maoist group, where the main qualification you need is to be extremely angry all the time. You can wear camouflage pants and put up posters that say things like "strangle the last cop with the last priest" and buy airsoft guns to train the desert.

The IWW is a union, not a socialist organization. It is also a very small union, not really notable.

All Canadian far-left organizations I've come across have a few dozen active members in each major city at the very most. If you live in a smaller city it probably makes more sense to just join up with labour and social movements than to try to become the vanguard organization.

Also please please remember that if you donate money to a political party you get large tax credits, and in Ontario those credits are a real credit against tax payable. Meaning if you give the Communist Party of Canada (Ontario) a $300 cheque, you will get $225 back on your taxes. Please consult with your party cell and accountant's office before taking this advice.

Alcoholics Anonymous
Relax, gramps! This isn't "hack collective" Anonymous, but rather a 80+ year old group dedicated to to the practice of abstinence from alcohol use for addicts. The modern young narcissist has plenty of accusations to throw at old AA: It's "a cult", it's a 1930s answer to a problem that can be solved with Drugs, or shocking your nuts while looking at photos of beer, and other modern treatments. Some say it doesn't even work. To all this I say, maybe, but on the other hand it's free. Feel free to attend an "open" meeting in order to realize that you aren't special or important and all your problems and thoughts are hilariously pedestrian. From here, you're welcome to become more involved, or if you prefer to be a little more "detached" and "cool" you can hang with the guys in the back who're constantly sighing and get a little piece of paper signed after the meeting. Make sure and toss a dollar in the basket and don't be offended if nobody lets you carry it.

Not a problem for me, I use a SnowdenBot to live in Jharkhand and fight with Naxalites. I attached guns to the sides and it works as a wifi hotspot. Enjoy your first world euro-marxism I'm getting a little something called praxis

I'm closely associated with Workers World and they're certainly not obsolete. Their showing in Philadelphia was incredible.

Workers World and PSL are the same thing and nobody knows why they split, right?

I'm sorry but the OP clearly states they are obsolete. The singular of data is not anecdote.

Alright...

Workers World Party
This party is oriented to the positions developed by Sam Marcy. Marcy began as a strident Trotskyist who found Stalin repulsive and called for revolutions across the socialist bloc to topple the bureaucratic regimes. However, Marcy also pivoted quickly at key moments, such as his embrace of the Cultural Revolution in China. Over time, Marcy began to identify as "Marxist-Leninist" and evolved a position called the "global class war" perspective. This meant that a broad progressive socialist bloc was fighting a war against American-led imperialism, and that socialist countries should be supported against this main threat. While Marcy remained fiercely critical of the leadership and rightists within socialist countries, he began to support the maintenance of the basic structure of the state against emerging so-called democratic movements.

After the collapse of the socialist bloc, the WWP reoriented towards a wider form of anti-imperialism which promoted essentially anyone that seemed to contradict American foreign policy interests. This led to a positive contribution towards organizing anti-war rallies. Of course, the WWP role in these is typically greatly exaggerated by the WWP, since similar protests happened in many other countries and were led by very different political tendencies.

The WWP thinks China is a socialist country, which is a nonsense position and really embarrassing for them - almost sad.

Since someone requested a Kkklanada one:

Communist Party of Canada not to be confused with the other, slightly more revisionist CPC. They do some cool stuff especially in terms of queer organizing but overall they are basically a liquidationist organization which in many cases encourages their members to not express their communist politics. This is especially true of their youth group, the YCL which is the second(?) largest left wing youth group in Canada. They are also super settler-colonial and don't include indigenous self-determination in their program.

This sounds pretty negative, but their individual members are cool and they're decent as far as western cp's go

Communist Party of Canada Marxist-Leninst Maoist - turned - Hoxhaist - turned weird New Left existentialist split from the CPC. Super pro Cuba and DPRK but ambivalent on other foreign issues. Uses a lot of left-nationalist sounding rhetoric and is therefore settlerist but I have no idea what their actual program is because their slogans are super obscure.

Random Trotskyite Sect including Sparts and IMT junkies.

Revolutionary Communist Party Cool edgy maoist party which hates bourgeois elections and consistently calls for boycotts. Does some nice work in the bigger cities and their youth group, the Revolutionary Student Movement is cool and is the largest (?) left-wing youth group in Canada, but one of their coordinating committee members was a dick to me and my partner once.

Revolutionary Initiative Really more of a cell than a party but they have some cool, if somewhat obscure, mass orgs and cooperate a lot with third worldist, indigenous, and national liberation support orgs which is cool.

List does not include mass organizations of respective parties or unaffiliated groups like the Common Fronts or Coalitions Against Poverty or decent Anarchisty collectives like ASSE or No One Is Illegal

I think youth voting went up by like 20 points after the Maoists called for a boycott in the last federal election, showing that the youth of Canada repudiate the Maoite revisionism of petty-bourgeois adventurers and their saboteur theory of people's war.

Lol, not saying I agree with the boycotts (and I have negative emotions associated with those campaigns) but "the youth" were effectively swept up by the NGO-industrial complex "left" implicitly supporting a sexier looking head hitler. A lot of white college kids became voting age that year though, so it's expected. The implicit boycott from indigenous nations like the Mohawk carries on though and is probably true for most sections of workers as well.

Maybe the Maoite boycott was designed by the NGO left as a false flag operation to associate non-voting with the killing fields of China.

In 2014 an astroturf group funded by ontario conservative supporters ran online ads calling for a boycott.... Makes you think.
