serious question: why are you asking me to explain the decision-making process of women joining the military

what should i have asked goatstein instead lol

#42
i honestly just really dont understand the female motivation for joining the military, especially when women have so many safer, much more rape-free and morally defensible economic options, such as stripping, literal prostitution, or finding a rich husband

unlike for men, there is literally no social compunction or socially constructed gender roles that force women to seek the kind of respect and vaunted warrior status that military service brings. Especially not coming from the right wing which typically serves as the main source of military lionization, they would rather have women barefoot and pregnant (but safe) in the kitchen, or, at most, serving in steno pools, far away from the rapacious eyes of male Troops. In fact, this entire modern feminine desire for masculine respect, "warrior status", incorporation into previously male-dominated institutions, etc. seems much more likely to be coming from......from..........oh....oh my god....it cant, it cant be....

The survivor reality tv franchise? I think the military (and women serving) has been around longer...
#46
i think roseweird is right here, women join the military for job opportunities or patriotism. the number of women in the military is negligible
#47
they join b/c they're dumb idiots just like the men
#48
they join because feminism has succeeded (as designed) in diverting productive revolutionary impulses toward bourgeois imperialist purposes

"they protect our freedoms" is how you can tell you're dealing with the baseline level of stupidity indicating a complete lost cause. like, the person who jumps into apologetics about college money or poverty or w/e still recognizes that what troops are doing is evil, they just argue extenuating circumstances. the people who seriously believe that ground troops actually do anything for our freedom might as well be those crowds of people weeping over kim jong il's ascension to heaven for as much as you're ever going to reach them with reality

America did just fine without a huge standing military for about 150 years. America's military was repeatedly underestimated by our enemies because they could not believe that a free citizenry could be rapidly mobilized without a massive military infrastructure. History proved them wrong.

I served in the military and one thing was crystal clear: I served to keep international commerce flowing and served a globalized financial system. I did not serve my country, I did not serve America's interests, its taxpayers, its citizens, its constitution, or its freedoms in any way.

Anyone who thinks the US military is used to protect the interests or freedoms of the US citizens is an absolute idiot.

What it true is that every liberal yuppie who acts so superior and claims to believe in peace, lives in a bubble created by the military because without the military you would have no access to cheap, plastic electronics, no easy credit cards, no ability to ship our paper overseas and get cars and tvs in return without having to have the factories and the pollution here in our backyard.

Anyone who makes a show of being a liberal and is not willing to give up their starbucks lattes, their iphones, their entire modern, technological lifestyle is not only an idiot but a parasite as well.

The military does not protect your freedoms, it protects your ability to buy cheap plastic electronics from overseas. The military makes our descent into laziness and modern yuppie values possible.

well yeah

but i mean this shit is just something that happens:

During the 2013 World Series, Bank of America, that beacon of patriotism and benevolence, sponsored an initiative called “Express Your Thanks.” For each photo, message or video submitted that expressed thanks to the military, the bank donated $1 to nonprofits that support service members, veterans and their families.
..
Bank of America provided American flags to each attendee of Game 1 at Fenway Park, and “asked those in attendance to wave the flag during “God Bless America” (before the bottom of the seventh inning) as an expression of thanks to U.S. troops.”
..
The NFL, with a culture that mirrors that of the military in many ways, is always more than willing to provide a massive platform for hyper-nationalistic promotion of the armed forces. Indeed, the league proudly states that “supporting the military is part of the fabric of the NFL.” This year, for Veterans Day, that “support” came in the form of an initiative called “Salute to Service,” which is all about “military appreciation.” Players donned camouflage gear and helmet decals honoring the armed forces. Colts quarterback Andrew Luck ran out of the tunnel during player introductions side by side with a service member, with the latter waving an American flag.

and 98% of the population doesnt even bat an eye at it. also lol bank of america jumping in on that good ol jingoism to earn some good will with $1 donations

it is entirely rational for labor aristocrats to support the imperialist military, the enforcers and guarantors of their otherwise unsustainable standard of living

the gangster for capitalism angle is pretty weird. just admitting that you're the hired gun of imperialism gets points for honesty at least, but it doesn't actually defend your actions, just accuses critics of hypocrisy. but hypocrisy arguments are always facile, especially when coming from someone who is more directly and actively involved in the evil act. so a person can correctly criticize pederasty even if they watch kiddy porn and nobody is going to stand behind the kidfucker and denounce said critic for hypocrisy
#66
to say that it is rational for labor aristocrats to support imperialism is not to say that it is moral to do so, rather it is to explain how le conventional morality of bourgeois imperial society largely flows from le economic/material conditions

yep. even the liabilities associated with defense industry rent-seeking and foreign adventures arguably detrimental to US interests (e.g. Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.) don't come close to counter-balancing the benefits the US military provides in enforcing the domination of US capital.

Even the Pentagon has said that the unwavering support for Israel is detrimental to foreign policy.

"We made the desert bloom! We're and entrepreneurial nation! Without us you wouldn't have computer processors, Nobel prizes, AOL instant messaging, etc. We have best army in the world. he's speaking about his past, it would be different if he said yeah this rifle kills for capital DWI bitches. Despite growing up in america and marinating in the propaganda all his life and becoming Troop to Save The Freedom, he still managed to keep some small shred of humanity alive and either retain or develop for the first time some basic cognitive ability and realized what it was all about and walked away and said something. Most troops never do that. They just keep on being abhorrent ghouls getting thanked by random people everywhere for being the junior varsity murderboy every time they turn around. Some get it and just kill themselves. Some few express how repulsive what they did was in hopes of dissuading others but no one ever hears

Kabul - The US will have "the exclusive right" to try its soldiers accused of crimes in Afghanistan, and will maintain several bases in the country after the bulk of its forces pull out next year, according to the full text of a draft security agreement published by the Afghan foreign ministry.
#73
reminder that the obama administration's inability to get the Iraqi government to accept a similar deal is why they had to pull out according to the negotiated timeline instead of extending their presence, because god forbid our hired murderers get before an impartial court

Don't read too much, if anything at all into recruiting demographic numbers. The recruiting program is extremely stats driven and probably one of the most complex and developed marketing regimes. There's obvious political reasons for making the numbers line up as close as possible with the general population. They're collecting demographic info as they recruit and adjusting targeted areas and goals in real time to match the data. The're only taking in X number of poor blacks from Mississippi because the recruiters in those areas have a quota, they hit that number without even trying and then fuck off to the nice suburbs beating down the doors to every high school chasing the underperforming idiot middle children of the HENRY crowd who are thrilled that the family embarrassment can be shipped away leaving them able to concentrate their effort and money putting the fortunate sons through law school or whatever. In a military empire it makes a nice status symbol without any real effort or expense like shopping a new mercedes. The poors just go on a waiting list if the quota is filled.

Also LOL at the statistics in the 2008 report. In 2007 the median household income was 52,673, but the 3rd quintile is 42-51k. Also the extravagant family income of 65,032 placed your fat bourgeois pig ass in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the USA, a place of fair and reasonable income distribution where the wealthiest families only made a quarter mil a year in the year before the new depression hit. Good to know.
