the only way to get to missisauga from downtown is to drive or take the bus from Islington which has to putter along deeply congested roads. there's the University shuttle as well, which takes the highway and is even worse.

what, the GO goes there

#128
what with transfer times at Union station and the dreadful state of feeder services to and from the 'sauga Go stations it works out quicker to take the Islington bus, terrifyingly. also those diesel trains accelerate so slowly that they take, by fits and starts, like 40 minutes to haul themselves out there hahahahaha

nope its just the trains

i've been reading the power broker in fits and starts over the past two months. it's a big and complex book but then NYC is a big and complex city. I don't think it's hyperbole to call him one of the more influential people of the 20th century, his ideas and plans went far beyond new york and far beyond america

like planners from melbourne would go to america in the 60s and come back with shit like this lol

this is an interesting interview.

http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/1317435--liberal-leadership-next-premier-can-t-detour-around-gridlock

i dunno if it means much to non-canadians but basically ontario is in a position where it is going to have to find some way to pay for all its road improvements and public transit. and because of that it's going to start talking about road tolls and such. right now the centre-left NDP controls the balance of power, and they are actually fairly pro-car, they called for gas tax cuts last election lol.

alright i know this is the train thread, but for those of us with open minds and a more general interest in freight transit, take a l@@k at this baby: http://store.steampowered.com/app/227300?snr=1_41_4__42

sucks for you guys. my state is about to abolish income and corporate taxes and bump the sales tax up to around 9% which means the county i live in will have a 13% combined sales tax, and prepared food will be taxed at 15%. for reference the current highest sales tax in america is chicago's which is like 12.25% and this is a place with over 20% unemployment

idk if this post is serious. total sales tax is it's 13-15% in most parts of Canada, VAT in the UK is 20%, all EU sales taxes have to be a min of 15% by EU agreement ...

tho while we're on the topic, somehow the population of British Columbia got really, really, really mad about provincial and federal sales taxes being combined into a harmonized sales tax that is equivalent or lower to the two combined, lmao, so they threw out the old govt and had a referendum and now the government is getting rid of HST (a 12% tax) and replacing it with two separate sales taxes each of which are 7%. i wish i were making this up

#143
also in ontario the ndp tried to play off anger at the HST by talking about how the government was trying to gouge people with an unfair tax. so they made the bulk of their fiscal platform a series of tax cuts on gasoline and heating fuel. of course they couldn't actually afford any major social programs because of that.

they also campaigned hard against corporate tax cuts, but their fiscal platform called for the bulk of those tax cuts to be redirected into new corporate tax cuts.

honestly why can't they just pay me like $25K a year and be like hey fiscal, we're trying to fight global warming, should we cut gas taxes? and i'll be like no man, no. okay word. we're also trying to build up social programs. should we cut taxes for big business instead? nope. don't do that. increase welfare payments instead. alright, alright.
#144
i wish the ndp would hurry up and rename itself the liberal party so we could have a leftish party again. not that the ruling party of the canadian parliament matters in any way to social trajectories

did you hear about how they might redraft their constitution again. it came up again recently i mean and they might have a big vote on it in april.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/inside-politics-blog/2013/01/ndp-may-revisit-proposal-to-rewrite-pro-socialist-preamble-this-spring.html

#146
bleh, i didn't see that, no. over the past few years i've dialed down my interest in conventional politics to a pretty minimal level.

there's an almost total disconnect between the grassroots workers and delegates of the ndp (at least in my experience) and the way the party presents itself via PR and marketing, and actually conducts policy work, and the rank and file are living in denial about it. perhaps things like this will force them to confront the reality of what the ndp has become, but it's a pretty deep denial, so i don't know. it feels like the party has no structure or direction. it's just kind of an amorphous blob of nice things people would like to do, that are nice. that $2 atm fee is a real pain. it would be nice to get rid of it. taxes? yeah, those are a bummer. cue jack layton (rip) and his slogans. none of it has anything to do with socialism.

you might've missed the part where i said we're getting rid of income and corporate taxes entirely. jacking sales tax up to canadian levels is just to keep roughly the same level of revenue. there'll be rioting in the streets and it'll be glorious

also the median income in canada is about twice what it is here

when was the last time americans rioted about a policy issue. there are a variety of states that have sales tax but no state income tax. i am sure lots of states will experiment with far more weird options as they fiscally disintegrate, this is pretty fuckin low on the weirdness scale. and there are so many more important things to give a tiny shit about than state tax structures & the other pointless minutiae of the legislative unwinding of america. forest/trees

Q. Why do you like trains?

A. Why do people like cars? Why do people like airplanes? Why do people like collecting coins? Why do people like baseball? Why do people like horse racing? Why do people like gambling? Why do people like bird watching? Why do people like soap operas? Why do people like Elvis? Why do people like rap music? Why do people insist on calling "rap, "music"? Why do people ask why people like trains?

When you can answer all of those questions (and more) with just one answer, then you will have the real reason. Until then...

Finally, I'm wondering what is the significance of the graphic in the Original Post ? "Aspies" is short for "Asperger's Syndrome" - simplistically, think of it as autism "light". A long time ago a significant correlation was observed between people who like trains and have either Asperger's or autism - both also known as being "on the spectrum" - but I am not aware of any cause-and-effect or linking theory having been established.

are you seriously arguing against obsessing over pointless minutiae in a trainchat thread?

#152
sales tax is so boring let's get some goddamn trainchat in here

A man is in hospital with critical head injuries after he was allegedly bashed by a teenager at a Sydney train station.

The 26-year-old man suffered a broken jaw and was knocked unconscious during what police described as a "vicious assault" at Yagoona Railway Station just after midnight.

Bystanders called police after seeing the man assaulted on the train platform.
The man's head is believed to have been stomped on during the assault, which also left him with serious cuts to his face.

Paramedics treated the 26-year-old man at the scene and took him to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition. Police said his condition had not improved by Tuesday morning.

this is why people drive

driving caused 10 head injuries in the time it took you to quote that and post it

that's because over the past decade they've been phasing out fare inspectors and after chopping fareless square simply outsourced the job to cops, since they can just arrest you on scene

who said i'm complaining?? i'm glad the police are always on the scene to keep the riff-raff, hooligans, and homeless off my public transit downtown

wait, you dont take a car/limo service? lol

no i do, but my tax dollars pay for the public transit and knowing our boys in blue are there keeping the trains safe is comforting.
